Take a deep breath and let your senses explode. From ancient farming villages in India to the futuristic cityscape of Tokyo, Asia provides such variety and contrast it would take many lifetimes to even start scratch the surface. Above all, is a spiritual place - infused with the gods of past and present: the ancient spirits of the land and the family, the teachings of Buddhism, the deities of Christianity and Hinduism and the rules of Islam. Across the region, scented smoke swirls from millions of joss sticks placed in offering at the many shrines and temples the faithful use to meditate and pray. Skipping Across Asia [02:34]
I hurled down through the atmosphere, landing in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Just in time for the camel market in Pushkar. After not finding anything in the colour I liked (blue), I headed east for a peek at the Taj Mahal. From there a great bound to Varanesi for a refreshing splash in the polluted Ganges. Then over for a quick stop in Dhaka, Bangladesh to checkout the organically propelled taxis. A hop over to Burma. First in Rangoon, a climb up to the Schwedagon Pagoda. With the glare off the gold and marble, you really need some shades. Then by train, I rolled north to the ancient city of Pagan, with its scattered temples and pagodas. Next, Bangkok, Thailand for three very uninspiring temple photos. With a sharp turn south via motor coach, I briefly visited the bustling hamlet of Singapore. The final stop was on Bali amongst the palms and the beach beyond, for body-surfing time, before leaping up into the stratosphere. The musical accompaniment is Jet Lag by Zazie.TECHNICAL NOTE: More images were captured in my mind's eye than with the camera. Unfortunately, I don't have a telepathy adapter for my scanner. Monks demand peace in Bangladesh [00:46]
Monks demand peace in Bangladesh Monks march in Thailand, urging the United Nations to intervene in a sectarian conflict in Bangladesh. Gathering outside a UN building in Bangkok, they called for protection for their fellow Buddhists and urged the UN to take action. The demo came after violence between Muslims and Buddhists, which saw temples and at least 50 homes set on fire. Police said the attacks happened after Muslims saw a photo on Facebook of a burned Koran, allegedly posted by a young Buddhist. The online account has since been removed.
