This is a slideshow series from a Buriganga river boat ride I took near the Sadarghat in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh. A trip to Old Dhaka is not complete without taking a boat ride down the Buriganga "Old Ganges" river in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Small crafts compete for space on the river front with enormous freighters and other large vessels. It makes for a fascinating dynamic. I took a humble row boat out on the waters near the Sadarghat. It at times was extremely scary as we got quite close to some very large ships. There are fatalities on this river from time to time. The word "Meghalaya" literally means the Abode of Clouds in Sanskrit and other Indic languages. Meghalaya is a hilly strip in the eastern part of the country about 300 km long (east-west) and 100 km wide, with a total area of about 8700 sq mi (22720 km²). The population numbered 2175000 in 2000. The state is bounded on the north by Assam and by Bangladesh on the south. The capital is Shillong also known as the Scotland of the East, which has a population of 260000. About one third of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion encompasses the state; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland tropical forests to the north and south. The forests of Meghalaya are notable for their biodiversity of mammals, birds, and plants. South Asia has some of the worst traffic and the craziest drivers (and at times the best) in the world. Filming my driver, Shuman, skills as he drives 100km per hour (avg) though Dhaka (in fast forward). I will never worry about NYC cab drivers skills next time I hail a taxi... just put on the seat belt. Here is a little taste....
