Globe Trekker - Bangladesh with Holly Morris [52:29]
In Globe trekker Bangladesh we follow host Holly Morris on an adventure through one of the poorest and most populated countries on the planet. It's a tough but rewarding journey and contrary to expectations Holly discovers a country overflowing with life, culture and incredible hospitality. Her trip starts in Dhaka, the capitol of Bangladesh and the 7th largest city in the world. After a hectic few days dodging rickshaw and tasting the favorite local dish Byrani, she boards the Rocket Paddle Steamer, a relic from the days of the British Raj, and embarks on a 24 hour journey down river to one of the largest mangrove forests in the world, the Sunderban National Park. Risking an encounter with the man eating Bengal Tigers that live in the park Holly joins a group of local villagers on a trek deep into the forest to find honey. The search is a success, despite having to brave a swarm of giant killer bees, and after tasting the golden nectar she departs northward to one of the poorest regions of the country. Journeying mostly by river Holly discovers that Bangladesh consists largely of flood prone low lying flat lands and river deltas. During the wet season large portions of the country are submerged and the northern regions of the country are often the hardest hit. Holly explores some of the ingenious methods the locals have developed to cope with the challenges they face and visits a local "floating" school where she ends up giving the children there a lesson in American ...

Yaks, Teesta river and Mt. Chomiomo / Kanchenjhau, in Sikkim [01:12]
A yak herder brings in his yak herd from the upper reaches of the Teesta river, in Sikkim, India. The yak, Bos grunniens, is a long-haired bovine found throughout the Himalayan region of south Central Asia. Yaks have shaggy hair to insulate them from the cold. Their habitat is treeless uplands such as hills, mountains and plateaus. They eat grasses, lichens and other plants. The yaks are seen grazing in front of Chomiomo, Kanchenjau and others peaks located on the Tibetan plateau, in north Sikkim, India near Teesta river valley. These peaks also lay en route the high altitude lake of Gurudongmar. The fence one sees in front protects visitors from straying into the mine fields that are still active from the India-Chinese wars from back in the 1960's! Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state located in the Himalayan Mountains. The state borders Nepal to the west, China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and east, and Bhutan to the southeast. The Indian state of West Bengal lies to the south. River Teesta or Tista is said to be the lifeline of the Indian state of Sikkim, flowing for almost the entire length of the state and carving out verdant Himalayan temperate and tropical river valleys. The emerald-coloured river then forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal before joining the Brahmaputra as a tributary in Bangladesh. The total length of the river is 309 km (192 mi), draining an area of 12540 km². A large portion of this was situated in Nepal. But after Sugauli ...

Eid spurs Bangladesh holiday rush [00:57]
Eid spurs Bangladesh holiday rush Men and women cling precariously to the side of trains about to depart from Dhaka, Bangladesh. They are among thousands leaving the capital to celebrate the Eid al-fitr holiday with their families outside the city as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan ends. But it's not just trains that are overbooked and overflowing. Ferries were also packed to capacity with holiday seekers heading to visit their home villages. Those unable to get berths, chased after the ferries in wooden rowboats, in hopes of boarding down the river. (SOUNDBITE) (Bengali) POLY, FERRY PASSENGER, SAYING: "I am going to my village to celebrate Eid with my relatives, there is a huge rush to get on the ferries so I have taken this boat to board a ferry." Eid al-fitr is one of Islam's biggest holidays and will be celebrated by Muslims around the globe starting Sunday.
