Buriganga River Boat Ride (Sadarghat) Slideshow - Old Dhaka, Bangladesh [03:11]
This is a slideshow series from a Buriganga river boat ride I took near the Sadarghat in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh. A trip to Old Dhaka is not complete without taking a boat ride down the Buriganga "Old Ganges" river in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Small crafts compete for space on the river front with enormous freighters and other large vessels. It makes for a fascinating dynamic. I took a humble row boat out on the waters near the Sadarghat. It at times was extremely scary as we got quite close to some very large ships. There are fatalities on this river from time to time. I was lucky to have a safe ride with the opportunity to do a lot of filming. nomadicsamuel.com The Buriganga is economically very important to Dhaka. Launches and Country Boats provide connection to the other parts of Bangladesh, a largely riverine country. When the Mughals made Dhaka their capital, in 1610, the banks of the Buriganga were already a prime location for trade. The river was also the city's main source of drinking water. Today, the Buriganga river is afflicted by the noisome problem of pollution. The chemical waste of mills and factories, home waste, medical waste, sewage, dead animals, plastics, and oil are some of the Buriganga's pollutants. The city of Dhaka discharges about 4500 tons of solid waste every day and most of it is released into the Buriganga.[citation needed] According to the Department of the Environment (DoE), 20000 tonnes of tannery waste, including some highly toxic materials, are ...

Eid spurs Bangladesh holiday rush [00:57]
Eid spurs Bangladesh holiday rush Men and women cling precariously to the side of trains about to depart from Dhaka, Bangladesh. They are among thousands leaving the capital to celebrate the Eid al-fitr holiday with their families outside the city as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan ends. But it's not just trains that are overbooked and overflowing. Ferries were also packed to capacity with holiday seekers heading to visit their home villages. Those unable to get berths, chased after the ferries in wooden rowboats, in hopes of boarding down the river. (SOUNDBITE) (Bengali) POLY, FERRY PASSENGER, SAYING: "I am going to my village to celebrate Eid with my relatives, there is a huge rush to get on the ferries so I have taken this boat to board a ferry." Eid al-fitr is one of Islam's biggest holidays and will be celebrated by Muslims around the globe starting Sunday.

'Allah ke bandey' - followers of Allah gather at Jama Masjid during Ramadan [01:03]
The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā, commonly known as the Jama Masjid of Delhi, is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal,in the year 1650 CE and completed in the year 1656 AD, it is the largest and best-known mosque in India. It lies at the origin of a very busy central street of Old Delhi, the Chawri Bazar Road. The later name, Jama Masjid, is a reference to the weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims, Jummah, which are usually done at a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or "jāmi' masjid".
