Red face

I remember when I was about to start uni (even though it may have been a few years back) life was full of hope and ambition!

I remember thinking okay I'm 18 now and by the age of 25 I want to have a job where I want to travel the world.

Now I am 25 and I'm still here stuck in my small quiet town, without even a job. What happened to those dreams of travelling to Australia, Japan, the middle east and around the Tiger economies in south east asia. To vist alaska and see the northen lights?

What happened to me? Well I think it's called reality. People say that you can dream of traveling the world but unfortunately I was born as the eldest in the family. I couldn't even travel away to uni cuz of family commitments.

Now that my brothers and sisters are getting older and going to uni they are moving away from home to study while I am left to take my nieces to nursury school? A hint of jealousy creeps in now seeing my bothers and sisters do what ever they want do to and go where they want to go.

So three points are raised.[list][*] Is it right to be selfish and do what u want to do in life and disregard family, after all it's ur life?[*] or should you feel happy that you ahve madea difference to ur brothers and sisters life?[*] Why do the eldest kid in the family always put up with this, is this story familiar to all families?

Yeah what happened to your dreams? You became a student and at the end realised you were left with an overdraft!

There is a saying "Without dreams man cannot fly!"

Allah has said if you can afford it and have the money and wish to see the beauties of the world that your Lord has created then do so.

I guess you are maturing brother whether you can do these things such as travelling you need to be realistic in your life and see that they're achievable.

Possible Answers!!

1. No i believe you shouldnt diregard family. But at the same time you need to get on with your life to prepare your future and your family. Yes it is your life but what do you want to happen when your old, your children to treat you the same??
2. Yes i think you should feel happy for how you have changed your sisters/brothers lives as they would feel as much proudness of you for being their elder brother.
3. You took the first step into life so taking the responsiblity and trying to set an example to the others in your family.

You may think you work harder than others in your family but it is that that will prepare you later in life!

Those are my answers!

Pssst, is there a prize?!

I am concerned at the recent influx of intellectual discussion taking place within this here thread.

My fear is that it will catch on and pretty soon encompass the whole forum.

Such troublemaking notions should be quelled straightaway.

BTW - Haroun - dont worry bout it mate

Phoenix - Surprisingly intelligent response.

brother "happiness is a cigar called Hamlet", chill out man have some bananas...

OK on a serious note in life you need to balance things out, family, worlk, education travell et all. Islam is a way of life not juts a thing therefore whatever we do we need to direct it towards th ehigher aim i.e. please Allah (swt).
In islam travelling is recommended as it increases knowledge, and knowledge is a vital aspect of ones life, but family to are vital.
We must not fall ot the trap of western thinking where one has to travel no matter what or that eastern thinking where your family require you to give all your time and money so buy soem land or soem building....what we need is a balance the balance that the holy prophet (sa) showed to us.
If we make Islam our priority then all these thinsg will come very smoothly without any hitch.
