Bond cuts through Bangladesh

ICC Champions Trophy, Colombo: New Zealand 244-9 (50 overs) beat Bangladesh 77 (19.2 overs) by 167 runs

A destructive new ball spell by New Zealand paceman Shane Bond wrecked Bangladesh's hopes of an upset victory at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Bond had Al Sahariar lbw in his oepning over and took four for 15 in his initial spell before skipper Stephen Fleming withdrew him from the attack.

He returned for one more over before the close, but could not manage a fifth wicket and it was spinner Daniel Vettori who ended the contest by bowling Manjurul Islam for 10.

At 19 for five, Bangladesh looked in danger of their lowest one-day score in 55 matches, but just managed to overhaul their 76 all out against Sri Lanka at the same ground last month.

They did well to restrict New Zealand to under 250 after Khaled Mashud won the toss, with leg-spinner Mohammed Ashraful taking three for 26.

The Kiwis were guilty of throwing wickets away early on with Nathan Astle (five) and Stephen Fleming (31) playing poor strokes and Scott Styris (26) running himself out as he attempted a second to deep square leg.

Mathew Sinclair's 70 provided the anchor for New Zealand, who benefitted from some wayward early bowling, which saw Bangladesh conceded 11 wides in the first six overs.

Sinclair hit five fours in his 122-ball innings before he was caught off Ashraful, and Jacob Oram provided some late impetus by making 30 off 27 deliveries.

Bangladesh needed a solid start in reply but never got started in their run chase as Bond and Oram tore into their top order, backed up by some excellent catching.

After removing Al Sahriar, Bond also picked up the wickets of Ashraful, Alok Kapali and Mashud, while his new ball partner ended a brief flurry by Tushar Imran, who struck four fours in making 20 off 16 balls.

Mahmud (11) and Mohammad Rafique (17) saw Bangladesh past Zimbabwe's 38 all out against Sri Lanka in December 2001, the lowest ever score in a one-day game.

But it was only a matter of time and although Islam had the temerity to drive Bond through mid-off for four, his innings - and the match - ended when Vettori found a way between bad and pad as he went for another big hit.
