Thousands cheat in Bangladesh exams

Exams are often a tense time in Bangladeshi schools

By Alastair Lawson in Dhaka
Up to 7,000 students sitting high school exams in Bangladesh have been expelled for cheating.

About half a million students are sitting the exams, which began on Thursday and last for a month.

The first day of exams in Bangladesh have always been a tense time.

But this year the government launched a high- profile media campaign warning students that, if they were caught cheating, they would be expelled.

Armed police and magistrates were on guard outside all the major exam centres and searched students before they entered.

Violence

Thousands caught trying to smuggle in notes to the centres were expelled, and in many areas rioting broke out when friends and relatives of the candidates were prevented from entering the exam hall.

Police were on guard at exam centres

About 100 people were injured.

In one incident in the north of the country, 3,000 pupils were expelled, along with nine teachers who were accused of helping them to cheat.

The outbreak of violence reflects how much is at stake for both students and teachers.

For pupils, good exam results can lead to a white collar job.

Schools that persistently under-perform in exams risk losing their state funding.

Bad weather

Recent heavy rainfall and strong winds have made conditions even tougher for students in exams that play a crucial part in determining whether they go to university.

Many had to sit three-hour papers using a shared desk and candles.

The Bangladesh College Teachers Association says that much of the violence during exams would stop if the activities of student unions was stopped.

The association accuses unions loyal to both the government and the opposition of helping students to cheat in return for getting their political support.

Ahhhh you so funny Ar! So the question to ask is it worth cheating if all causes riots?

There was something on tv recently that a guy had become a teacher for years and couldn't read! He passed his exams by passing the paper out a window to a friend in exchange that the friend wanted to dance with a girl at the prom! Hmmmmm?! Makes you wonder. The teacher has taught many great students tho whilst hiding the fact he couldnt read!
