Allama Sir Mohammad Iqbal (ra) was a Sunni Muslim. He was a well educated philosopher, thinker, visionary, critic and a great poet who played a major role in the creation of a separate homeland (Pakistan) for the Indian Muslims. His birthday called 'Iqbal day' is still a public holiday in Pakistan.

In his poetry (in Farsi and Urdu) he has written a lot of good things about Ahly Bait and general concepts of Islam that agree with Shia views.

Once some Sunni ulema got angry and came to him to ask if he has converted to Shia’ism?

Allama Iqbal wrote a poem regarding this meeting. In one of the verse he says about himself:

In Urdu:

"hey is ki tabiat mei, taShai’o bhe zara sa."

In English:

In his (Iqbal’s) nature is also Shia’ism, a little.

Ronay wala hoon Shaheed-e-Kerbala key gham men main,
Kya durey maqsad na dengey Saqiye Kausar mujhey

I am one who weeps at the plight of the Martyr of Kerbala
Won't the reward be given to me by the Keeper of Kauser (Imam Ali (AS)

The light lit by the Prophet has always been under attack by the evil of the likes of Abu Lahab.
He who spits at the sky shall find the spit smeared on his own face. Since the Tragedy of Karbala, many have tried to erase the name of Hussain but they ended up with their own names erased from the face of earth and Hussain's glorious name shines on brighter than the suns of the entire universe.

Remember the time when the Abbassi King Mutawakil ordered the levelling of Hussain's grave and ordered that a canal be dug so that Hussain's grave be submerged under water. Today, Hussain's magnificent Shrine still stands hallowed in glory and majesty but nobody knows were the wretch Mutawakil is buried.

It is a historical fact that all those who particpated in the murder of Hussain later died either by the sword or by a horrible disease.

Allama Iqbal has said that the struggle between Hussain and Yazid is like the struggles between Ibrahim and Namrood and between Musa and Fir'aun. In his death, Hussain triumphed over Yazid. No, I am wrong, the very moment, when Hussain stood before Walid, the Umayad governor of Medinah and rejected the demand of allegiance, at that moment Hussain defeated Yazid. In his death, Hussain tore away the veil behind which kufr and nifaq was hiding. The kufr of the Umayads which had covered itself with a false acceptance of Islam, on the day of the conquest of Mecca, under Muawiya and Yazid was trying to reestablish itself. Hussain for once and all destroyed it that it could never challenge Islam again. Never did any later King dare to demand allegiance from the later Imams of Ahlul Bayt.
Qatl e Husain (AS) asl me marg e Yazid he,
Islam zinda hota he her Karbala ke bad."

"Slaughter of Husain (AS) is in fact the death of Yazid,
Islam is revitalized after each event like that of Karbala."
gharib o sada o rangeen he dastan e haram,
nehayat is ki Hussain (AS), ibtida he Ismael (AS)"

Story of the family (haram) is unfortunate, simple and colorfull.
It began with Ismael (AS) and ended with Husain (AS)"

Here Allama Iqbal is refereeing to the following verse of Quran predicting Zibhin-Adheem, the Great Sacrifice of Karbala:

“And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” Al-Quran 37.107

Where Allah accepted the sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS) and saved his son Ismail (AS) IN EXCHANGE FOR a Great Sacrifice (Zibhin-Adheem), the slaughter of Imam Husain (AS) who was from his generation.
Na Sateeza gah-e-jahan nayi, na hareef-e-panja fagan naye..
wohi fitrat-e-Asadullahi wohe Marhabi wohi Antari

Neither are the battle grounds of the world new, nor are the opponents who are fighting.
Same are the ways of (those who follow) Allah’s Lion (Imam Ali(AS), and same are the ways of (those who follow) Marhab and Antar (with whom he fought).
Islam kay Daman main bus is do hi to chezain hain
Ik zarbe yadullahi ik sajda-e-shabbiri

There are only and only two things which Islam have (or due to which Islam stands)..
One is the striking of the Hand of Allah (Imam Ali's[as] sword) and other is the prostration/bomage of Shabbir (Imam Hussain[as])
