Who was flogged in public for wearing heavy makeup? Obviously you didn't bother reading what FYI wrote. Let me remind you, the article said:

Quote:
Ayatollah Shahroudi's statements come following recent public flogging of offenders, mostly convicted on charges of drunkenness or harassment of women, which have triggered mixed reactions among Iranians.
Do you find this degrading to women? That fact that the law protects women them from being harassed?

Now regarding punishment - what is the point if it doesn't cause pain and suffering to the criminal. You either have to go for mental punishment or physical punishment. I don't know of any societies where there is NO punishment.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. In Aghhanistan, women are flogged for wearing make-up. They may start doing that in Iran also as the clergy becomes more and more powerful.

>>>...That isn't true, the majority of people in Iran are "educated" Muslims...>>>

That is a fact. And that is what makes the news even more depressing, to think that a unworthy minority rules an educated majority.

>>>...If all you can do is "guess" then don't bother, it's just a waste of your time and mine...>>>

The whole of Internet is a waste of everybody's time, but that's the way it is. If you feel very strongly about your time, there is a way out: you can ignore my posts.

>>>...Who was flogged in public for wearing heavy makeup? Obviously you didn't bother reading what FYI wrote...>>>

Actually I did, and this is what I found:

>>>...Police have threatened to arrest shop owners selling such pets as dogs and monkeys, clothes or other goods carrying pictures of Western movie and rock stars.
Coffee shops and restaurants were ordered not to serve women flouting the Islamic dress code (Hijab) or wearing heavy make-up...>>>

This is why I was talking about breathing in free air.

Red face

The people on this Forum should understand, once & for all, that Orthodox/Fundamentalist Islam is based upon Force & Compulsion. And everything that is described in the article and in responses from the Shias on this board confirms this.

If the Iranian women were not the most educated in the muslim world and had the power to vote - both are a legacy of the Shah of Iran's regime, Iran would be similar to the Taliban's Afghanistan.

It's the Iranian women who are largely responsible for electing into power the reform-minded govt of Khatami and for striving to elevate the status of the women in Iran which includes the ability of women to work and educate.

Take the Women out of the Iranian equation and you have a deep slide back into the dark zone which is where Orthodox Islam belongs anyways! Because once the women are taken out of the equation, left are shias like Muhammad & Jibbi who can go to hell and take their Iran with them!

Women in Iran have a lot of freedom. They go to schools, colleges and Universities. They take part in elections and have seats in parliament (majlis). They work in offices and drive cars, etc. They also have more respect then what they had in the time of the late Shah.

Women do not enjoy such freedoms in other nearby countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

FYI
Thank you for proving the points that I was making!

This higher status that the Iranian Women enjoy is DIRECTLY as a result of their high literacy & skill rate, actually the highest in the muslim world.

And, this high literacy & skills for Iranian women is attributed to the Shah of Iran's regime not the Islamic state of the ayatollahs.

Now, if the Iranian women were not that highy educated and had the right to Vote or similar to the Afghan women then there would be no difference between the Islam of Iran or Afghanistan. You are not going to tell me that the Islamic regime in Afghanistan is pro-women and the women are flourishing in Afghanistan, are you?
