Massacre at Karachi mosque Nine people have been shot dead at a mosque in Karachi in what appears to be the latest of a series of violent attacks targeting the minority Shia Muslim community. BBC Islamabad Correspondent Owen Bennett-Jones: "Security will be stepped up" A group of masked gunmen burst into the Imanbargah Hurmain mosque in the eastern Al-Falah district and opened fire with automatic weapons on worshippers during dawn prayers. In a separate incident, a Shia Muslim has been shot dead by two unknown gunmen in Multan, in Pakistan's Punjab province. The attacks follow a week of growing violence against the Shia community. The floor of the mosque was littered with bodies of the slain Shias have blamed (Wahhabi)muslim extremists for the attacks, in particular the violent Sipah-e-Sahaba (Guardians of the Companions of the Prophet). Officials say the incidents have taken place after several months of relative calm and indicate that armed gangs may be back on the streets to start another round of sectarian violence. About 4,000 people have been killed in the last four years in political, ethnic and sectarian violence centred on Karachi. Pool of blood There were about 30 worshippers in the mosque when the attack happened, witnesses said. Correspondents say local residents and volunteers rushed to the mosque and helped the injured as blood spread all over the floor of the prayer room. Survivors of the attack said the gunmen fled after making sure that most of the people attending the prayers had been hit. "I just saw two masked men who opened fire at us, and then there was only blood, screams and shouts," said Ghulam Hussain Jafri, the Imam of mosque, who was among the injured. Sectarian strife Soon after the incident hundreds of people gathered outside the mosque, chanting slogans against the government and Sunni extremists. Karachi's security forces have been put on alert The government condemned the killings and promised additional security throughout the country. "Evil forces are active to destabilise democratic forces in the country," said Punjab provincial Law Minister Raja Elahi, although he did not indicate to whom he was referring. In Multan, Akhtar Hussein, said to be a supporter of the main Shia Tehrik-e-Jafria party, was shot dead outside his bakery in the early hours of the morning. A BBC correspondent says a 10-year-old boy, who was in the shop at the time, was hurt in the attack. On Thursday, a Shia activist Ejaz Hussain, a lawyer, was killed in Gujranwala town, about 65 km (40 miles) north of Lahore. On Tuesday a central secretary-general of the Tehrik-e-Jafria party, his daughter and bodyguard were killed in the North West Frontier Province.

Taken from BBC News Site - Today
Five people have been shot dead in Karachi in what police believe is the latest round in a bitter feud between extremist Muslim factions. The victims, who were from a Sunni Muslim school, died when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their van on a bridge in an eastern district of the city. The gunmen escaped and in the aftermath five more people were wounded in an exchange of gunfire. Hundreds of people have been killed in Sunni-Shi'ite violence in Pakistan in recent years. The two groups disagree over interpretations of Islamic beliefs. Exchange of fire The van was carrying students and teachers to an Islamic seminary, the Jamia Farooqia, in Shah Faisal Colony. At least three of the dead are believed to be clerics. Hours after the bridge attack, Sunni activists forced the closure of shops in Shah Faisal Colony and lit bonfires. There were reports of gunfire from the area. Last week a prominent Shi'ite Muslim cleric was shot dead outside a Karachi mosque following the death of an Iranian Shi'ite cleric in central Punjab 10 days ago.

Again Br. Abdur Rahman, you put the Wahabis in brackets besides Muslim Fundamentalists. I don't think that was part of the original article. How low can you go in trying to convince us that Whabis are bad?
Think what you are saying. Shia Sunni riots have taken place in pakistan since its creation. Now all of a sudden any Sunni who fights with a Shia becomes a Wahabi !! There are countless Sunnis who don't agree with the Shia doctrine and frankly speaking don't consider them part of the brotherhood, according to you they are all Wahabis. What can I say? Great, this is propaganda at its best. Consider this before you post further threads of this sort.

They say they are the soldgiers of the Companions (R) but in reality they have little to do even with the companions, all they know is that and their slogan is shia, shia, kaffir, kaffir thats all they know and that is thier aims and objectives to kill shias or anyone who does not accept that shias are not kafirs. Ask any nuetral Pakistani and they will tell you what i just said now. To your last point i really dont care what some may think that shias as not being part of the brotherhood, what really matters is that does Allah, the Quran and his Prophet see that way and not what you and I think

Being a Pakistani ..........
Assalam-o-Alliakum
"Soon after the incident hundreds of people gathered outside the mosque, chanting slogans against the government and Sunni extremists." I am sure that above will contain people from all sect and different groups of thoughts. There is a one main groups in Pakistan one group in named "Sapha Sahaba" they are mostly behind most of these thing. I am sure that they does not contain all Wahabis or so mean I know that it contain Sunni but Sunni from praticular sect no way. As I had 1000s of classfellows (because I spend my life in 10+ different cities in pakistan) so my one good friend is in "Sapha Sahaba" he did gave me a book (from "Sapha Sahaba") and book contains many points about Shia that "they are not muslims and should be declare Kafir" I am not convinced but yes got confused reading that book.... I want to discuss those point in the book with someone but afraid to discuss and post on forum .... No one can say there is not justification of killing saying any thing at all. And all people from all groups of thoughts in pakistan are condemning it .... And wish to stop these type of groups. I love my religion and I know it is a great sin to kill an innocient animal so how can someone kill a innocient person. So this is too bad .......... Allah Hafiz Faisal Aslam |
