Turk justice min challenges army Islamist charges ISTANBUL, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Turkey"s justice minister on Tuesday challenged the powerful military to back up its claims that Islamist radicals seeking to overturn the secular order had infiltrated the country"s judiciary. Pressure for a crackdown on political Islam in Turkey has mounted in recent weeks. An official of Turkey"s Constitutional Court on Tuesday told Reuters the court may rule in October on a bid to close the main Islamist opposition Virtue party for allegedly seeking to overturn Turkey"s secular order. Chief of General Staff Huseyin Kivrikoglu last week urged Turkey"s government to press ahead with plans to purge suspected radicals from the ranks of the civil service, warning "they have spread everywhere...they have seeped into the judiciary." Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk, without mentioning the armed forces, called on those alleging Islamist influence in the judiciary to back their claims. "Anyone who has evidence of judges and prosecutors taking part in illegal activity, of acting counter to the principles of the republic, is obligated to bring evidence, if it exists, to officials of the Justice Ministry," he said in remarks broadcast by the private NTV television channel. "Those making allegations about judges and prosecutors at the highest level of the judiciary must rely on hard evidence." Turk"s comments seemed to mark growing differences over the means of combating political Islam between some civilian officials and the military establishment, which has toppled three governments in coups since 1960. |
