54 Muslims expelled for singing ‘Vande Mataram’ praises

Wednesday March 10 2004 00:00 IST

AGRA: Taking a strong step against some Muslims who sought votes for the BJP and said the national song, ‘Vande Mataram’, is a way to express love towards the homeland, Agra's local Mufti Abdul Kuddus Rumi has expelled them from the community. His fatwa has also nullified their weddings.

The expelled Muslims, at least 54 of them, also include the Mutwallis (masjid heads) of the Loha Mandi and Shaheed Nagar mosques where these Muslims had held their Friday meetings. According to the information available, a group of Muslims had reportedly expressed their patriotic sentiments in a meeting at the Loha Mandi mosque on Friday by declaring that ‘Vande Mataram’ is a song written purely in the praise of the motherland and it doesn't mask any religious sentiments.

They also reportedly urged fellow Muslims to support the BJP in the coming parliamentary elections claiming it to be the only party thinking about the welfare of the Muslims.

The statement invited a heated debate on the issue of the religious implications of singing ‘Vande Mataram’ among the Muslims and some of the religious leaders sought Mufti Rumi's advice. Mufti promptly issued a fatwa expelling 54 from Islam while declaring that the song will lead Muslims to hell. He said that by advocating the song, these people are deviating from the path shown by Prophet Mohammad so they may leave Islam too.

He also said that if any of the expelled people wish to revert to Islam, they will have to cleanse their soul of the ``unclean'' thoughts and re-marry according to Islam as their marriages were being declared null and void with immediate effect.

Reacting, UP Sunni Waqf Committee chairman Dr Siraj Qureshi said the national song is indeed a way to praise the motherland and that the country is over and above religion. He suggested that the song be translated into Urdu and Arabic for the clerics to find out for themselves that it doesn't preach religion in any way.

President of the Islamia, Agra, Nuruddin said the fatwa is in direct violation of the fundamental rights of Muslims.

Disagreeing, local cleric Malik Azim said the issue was being raised by the BJP in its political interest and the party has misguided those Muslims who believe that ‘Vande Mataram’ is not linked to religion. He said these misguided Muslims should ponder over the real meaning behind this ``cleverly composed'' religious hymn.

I guess the good Mufti would also find fault in Muslim Bangladeshi's singing 'Amar Sonar Bangla,' another famous Tagore composition.

I believe school children in Bangladesh are often expected to sing the national anthem every morning, while lining up behind our jathio pothaka. It is also the composition of choice at most local, national and international social functions in which Bangladesh and Bangali's are represented.

The Indian national anthem, 'Vande Mataram,' calls for 'the salvation of all people;' presumably including Indian Muslims. I therefore see no reason why Indian Muslims cannot freely express themselves by singing it alongside their fellow Non-Muslim citizens.

AR Rahman is also a Muslim

The famous music composer, A.R. Rahman is also a Muslim and he has himself sang "Vande Mataram" and in fact given a new music to this song. Nobody outcasted him. Actually, poor and illiterate are exploited by the Mullahs, and not only in Muslims but in every religion. The diference is that in other faiths the majority has a voice, unlike Muslims where there are very few who talk against these Mullahs.

No i don't.

No reason why anyone would think that..
just a pathetic attempt at a cheap shot no doubt fuelled by the fact that you're still smarting from having your dishonesty and lack of objectivity (even though you feign to portray this) exposed and flashed up in neon lights across this forum.

as long as they aint bowing down, worshiping it or taking it in the same regard as they do the Quran, there shouldnt be a reason for them to be "expelled from Islam".

dear amar sonar,
Little correction here, 'Vande Mataram' is a nationalist patriotic song not a national anthem.
India's national anthem is -'JANA GANA MANA'

But this issue has a history behind it. 'Vande Mataram' was a freedom song attached to our independence. During british Raj, saying Vande mataram was an unbailable offence, as it showed the singer as a rebel. Indian freedom fighters would write -Vande Mataram on jail walls to irk brits. It had a strong impact on out fore father's struggle. And this song had become a passion cutting across the religious divide. Yes, there were muslim freedom fighters who too sang it.

When India got her independence, 'Vande Mataram' was the first choice as a National Anthem'. But muslim lobby backed out and called it unislamic and gave an ultimatum that muslims wont respect/sing it. That was the time, when hindus and muslims were at each other's throat....to calm down the situation, congress made peace with muslims and sacrificed the wishes of 80% patriotic indians for 20%unpatriotic ones.

Ever since than Hindu fanatics and muslim fanatics have made this an ego struggle.
If you hear the song,it has no religious overtones. Its jingoistic at its best. I fail to see why they find it unislamic. Or was it a nonisssue just to spike majority!!
