Meaning of Vande Mataram

Having read the verses you've posted, it seems to me that there are similarities with the Bangladeshi national anthem. Both are tied and pay homage to the land. Both seek to personify the homeland as a 'mother' figure. Although I can understand how the word 'bow' might be interpreted by some Muslims. Then again, it is said that paradise lies at the mothers feet in Islam. Furthermore, Muslim's (at least the Bangladeshi ones) have traditionally observed the salamalki at important social events such as Weddings, where the bride and groom salaam the parent/elders feet. So singing a song about bowing to the motherland isn't a biggie in comparison.

I just think that these songs are meant to bring people together for common endeavour and effort and must be seen in that context. 'Expelling' Muslim's from Islam for being patriotic is silly. As Bangladeshi's say, 'desh prem imanner ongo' or 'love for country is a part of iman' (faith). Arefinbhai has it right. A Muslim is not supposed to call into question the Islam of another, ultimately that is for Allah (SWT) to judge. It is playing god.

the Canadian anthm is good, I think (well course Id think so...) has a great tune too!!

Umm...APN...the Canadian national anthem hardly unites all Canadians as a community! For instance, 'true patriot love in all thy sons command'. What about all thy daughter's, including you? The Canukie anthem also calls upon the almighty, but what about atheists? Are most you Canukies churchgoer's anyhow?

I suggest a new Canukie anthem for a new century! The ideal solution would be to sing the words 'O Canada' over and over again to the same music. It wouldn't offend a soul! lol

Here goes:

O Canada!
O Ca-na-na-na-da
O Ca-nada O Ca-na-na-na-da
O Canada O Canada
O Ca-na-na-na-da
O Canada
O Canada, O Ca-na-na-na-da
O Ca-nada, O Ca-nada
O Canada, O Ca-na-na-na-da
O Canada, O Ca-na-na-na-da

(Someone might want to add a new stanza concerning mounties and lumberjacks. Just to round things off)!

our anthem in ancient, thus the reason for all thy "sons" commands. we get that...and us daughters dont mind.
and us Canadians arent soo picky, causing controversy over the Almighty thing like our neighbors do with their Dollar bill.

see...you Brits have no creativity...*sigh* when will you learn

Thainc yiou, amar sonar.
yep, i agree, all jingoistic songs sound the same. Its silly to dismiss it on grounds of religion esp in a secular country which does not even subscribe to thoes religious views. But than, thats history. If it had disturbed few than, and if hindus have pledged not make it the country's anthem, we should stand by that.

I have never seen an indian muslim showing disrespect to our national anthem or any patriotic songs. Infact there are music directors/singers like naushad, AR rehman, talaaq mehmood, mohemmad raffi, who have churned out the best of patriotic music in bollywood masala.
If you would have seen mahabharat serial on TV in 80s, it was scripted by a muslim writter. I trust indian muslims as true sons of soil,I have no doubt in their integrity.

As for that pinhead mufti, there is a matching pin head tagodia!!
