The Broad Cloak of Islam

Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah

Muslim's in the West should take their differences and organise them so that they don't cause hatred, animousity and lead to dissention. We have to respect different attempts at arriving at the truth from our own perspectives. That's very important.

Wherever we (Muslims) go we should live together peacefully and co-exist, not only with mainstream society but amongst ourselves.

The Robe of Islam is a vast robe. It encompasses alot of people and opinions and it is not for anybody to claim for themselves (ASB: bravo!! ).

It has alot of big pockets, a very long tail and we can all fit inside. There is no reason we should be fighting over our little place because there's plenty of room for everybody.

Commentry: Beautiful!
It's a crying shame we on this forum tend to try and ram our views in Islam, be they on social interaction and datig or who and who is not a Muslim.

Sheikh Bayyah was the Sheikh of Hamza Yusuf I believe - so must be a fountain of knowledge.

I agree with the sentiment accept for your own commentary. I don't think this forum ram's any views on Islam. And where one's personal views on Islam are impressed, you have been no different to anyone else in this respect.

Let's get one thing clear - Sheikh Bayyah is not endorsing dating - he is not telling us to fall in line with Western culture - other than in aspects of it where we can see good.

In this environment we live in - we need to chart a delicate course - on one hand we have ppl who wish to avoid interaction and dialogue with Non-Muslims, and for whom everything sourced in the West is inherently wrong - and then we have others who would wish for us to adopt Western Civilisation in its entiretly, including it's lack of spirtuality, secularism, materialism, dating even - and we, as Muslims, growing up in this country, need to avoid both pot-holes.

Salaamz Star/Anisa22,

Hm....I did say ‘we on this forum’-thus implicitly including myself in this tendency. Neither did I imply that the noble Shaykh made any comment on dating. ‘Commentry’ means just that.

I think we Muslim’s are too quick to judge and this is why it turns so readilly to acrimony.

The balance must be struck. If the West could learn from and surpass us, I see no reason we cannot return the favour.

There is a wealth of discussion taking place out there - often through the likes of Western Reverts to Islam eg Abdul Hakim Murad, Gai Eaton, Hamza Yusuf - who tackle these issues at a far greater intellectual depth than I would ever be able to do so. Hence I would refer you to their talks, essays, lectures, books etc.
