Bukhari Study Circle, 18-02-03

Sayyidna Umar (ra) narrated, ‘If there were not the following three things, I would have preferred to meet Allah: (1) To go out in the Way of Allah; (2) to bow my head on the earth before Allah; (3) To sit along with such people who collect good speech (from the assemblies) as one picks up ripe dates.’ (Imam Ahmad in al Zuhd)

We are currently studying the noble words of the Mercy to the Worlds, the Seal of the Prophets (Allah bless him and give him peace), the one because of whom this ummah has been honoured, the Holy Prophet Muhammed (Allah bless him and give him peace). Faithful servants of Allah preserved his words through the ages so that we may partake of their blessings. The most famous compilation of hadith is Sahih al Bukhari by the ‘Mountain of Memory’, the ‘Imam of the dunya in hadith’, Imam Muhammad bin Isma`eel al Bukhari (may Allah have mercy upon him). We are studying each hadith at a time, leaving no hadith uncovered, from cover to cover. This is an opportunity usually open only to those studying in an Islamic Institution after years of study. We are studying the famous abridgement of this great book by Imam Zain ud Din az Zabidi (rh).

In order to gain maximum barakah (blessings) we are studying this book in the traditional manner as was practised by the pious predecessors. The study is to be conducted in one of the Homes of Allah under the tutorage of Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq, the Khatib & Imam of Birmingham Central Mosque. This respected scholar is also the chief teacher at Madinatul Uloom al Islamiyyah (Islamic University in Kiddeminister, UK).

Where a better place to learn the words of Allah and His Rasul (Allah bless him and give him peace) than the Masajid of Allah? Where a person is rewarded for just sitting therein. Sayyidna Abu Hurayrah (ra) narrates that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

‘Whoever enters this Masjid of ours in order to learn or teach something good then he will be like a Mujahid in the way of Allah, and whoever enters the Masjid for any other reason then he is as one who peeps at something, covets something that does not belong to him.’ (Imam Ahmad in his musnad)

Learn these blessed words in the manner that it has always been taught from the lips of a teacher to the attentive students. Abdullah ibn Mubarak (rh) complained ‘There was great blessing, fortune and good in this knowledge as long as this knowledge passed between men. The moment this passed into books, then much of that good has been lost.’

We request that you come yourselves and bring others also, to learn the words of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: ‘Whomsoever guides towards a goodness, will get virtues equal to the one who performs that goodness.’ (Muslim)

On Friday the 14th of February 2003 we finished on hadith number 496. Below are the next few ahadith in Tajrid al Sarih that may be covered on Tuesday the 18th of February 2003.

CHAPTER 5. To wear the best available clothes (for the Jumu'a prayer).

497. Narrated ('Abdullâh bin 'Umar (ra): 'Umar bin al Khattâb (ra) saw a silken cloak (being sold) at the gate of the mosque and said to Allâh's Messenger (saw), I wish you would buy this to wear on Fridays and also on occasions of the arrivals of the delegations. Allâh's Messenger (saw) replied, This will be worn by a person who will have no share (reward) in the Hereafter. Later on similar cloaks were given to Allâh's Messenger (saw) and he gave one of them to 'Umar bin al Khattâb on that 'Umar said, O Allâh's Messenger! You have given me this cloak although on the cloak of 'Utârid (a cloak merchant who was selling that silken cloak at the gate of the mosque) you passed such and such a remark. Allâh's Messenger (saw) replied, I have not given you this to wear. And so 'Umar bin al Khattâb (ra) gave it to his pagan brother in Makka to wear. (2:11O.B.)

CHAPTER 6. To clean the teeth with Siwâk on Friday.

498. Narrated Abu Huraira (ra): Allâh's Messenger (saw) said, If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwâk for every Salâh (prayer). (2:12O.B.)

499. Narrated Anas (ra): Allâh's Messenger (saw) said, I have told you repeatedly to (use) the Siwâk. (The Prophet (saw) put emphasis on the use of the Siwâk.) (2:13O.B.)

Please note that the translation for the above ahadith is not endorsed by ourselves but rather is taken from the commonly available English translation of Tajrid al Sarih.
