Neelimon Says Hi!

Hello, I am neelimon, I am 20 years old, studying BBA at Dhaka University. I was browsing over the net for human rights issues in Bangladesh for my “Socio-Economic Study of Bangladesh” Course, and I found this forum out. I’ve liked this forum a lot, because I think here I can find many people from whom I can learn a lot, with whom I can freely share my thoughts and feelings about the past, present and future of my country. And I think this is the place where I can make some really good friends eventually. I don’t know anybody in this forum yet, but I’d love to get introduced to all the members of the forum.

Regarding me, I can say that I am a very simple and ordinary girl with really simple dreams in life. But most certainly I want to do something good for my people at some point of my life.

My hobbies are… reading, reading, reading… a little bird watching, photography, taking care of my plants on the rooftop, and traveling, though I haven’t got the opportunity to travel a lot yet.

When I get bored, I either start to eat something, or I go to sleep, so I never actually get bored! And I can sleep as much as I can; basically I am a very lazy girl, especially regarding my studies.

Okay that’s all about me for the time being, I will keep you updated about me in this thread regularly!

Please forgive me for my bad English; it has always been my second language.

Take care all.

Thank you!

Hello Sir! Thank you so very much for welcoming me in this forum.

It is really tough to answer what kind of books I read, because basically I am a bookworm, I read everything printed in paper, even the Murir Thongas. And I am lucky enough to get to know some people, who haven’t read… I don’t know what!

Co-incidentally, Historical Fiction is one of my most favorite subjects, just like you! Some of my most favorite books are Shei Shomoy, Prothom Alo, Eka Ebong Koyekjon, Moitreya Jatak, Volga Theke Ganga, Prodoshe Prakritojon, Rajaboli…

I am also a great fan of Russian writers, and among them, my most favorite is Anton Chekhov. I know no English to express how I like his writings. And I also looooooooooove the works of Arkadi Gaidar, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Gorky. I just keep reading from their writings time to time. one of my hobbies is also to collect old prints of Russian books, translated and published by Raduga Prokashoni, and Progoti Prokashoni, you know, thick pages, big types, easy language, colorful pictures, and the smell of old paper!

And I must mention the names of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Erich Maria Remarque, Mark Twain, and Manik Bondyopadhyay, and obviously, Sukumar Ray. They made me laugh and cry many times in my life.

I haven’t read much English though, I have read mostly the Bengali translations of the works of different foreign writers. That’s why my English is so BAD!

What about you? Please share the names of your favorite writers and favorite books. What are your other hobbies? What do you do when you have nothing else to do?

Please respond soon, shall be waiting for your reply.

Regards,

Neelimon.

My you do like reading books!! I've read books but I can't remember most of them until someone starts talking about the book! I tend to read and forget about them, only the good once stick in mind.

Unfortunately I don't know Bengali that well (apart from speaking) - I read mostly in English or the English translation of foreign books. Currently I've been reading books by the author Kanan Makiya (The Rock), Philip K Dick (The man in the high Castle), Hemmingway and Jorge Luis Borges. I am really into Borges at the moment especially his book Labyrinths. I suggest you read it; its too deep, makes my head hurt...
I too have read some of Marquez.

One of my favourite books is Evelyn waughs' Black Mischief - its hilarious!! Read this, Read this!!

A quote from Black Mischief (two natives, of africa, are looking at English ladies) -

"Which of the white ladies would you like to have?"
"The fat one. But both are ugly"
"Yes. it must be very sad for the English gentlemen to marry English ladies"

Another one of my favourite authors is Oscar Wilde; I really like his short stories.

Apart from a few I know absolutely nothing about Russain writers!!! I have a russian friend, whom I get into heated debates, in a joking way, about religion (he's an atheist).
Have you thought about learning Russian?

Your english is fine; in fact better than most people

Mostly chilling out, meeting friends, learning new things, watching films, DIY. If I really get bored I phone my sister up and bug her

So neelimon where in Dhaka do you live? Last time I went to Dhaka (last summer) the whole place looked like a building site with a tremendous amount of dust. It looked like nearly everyone was building flats! I had to escape to the country. The sad thing is really I wanted to visit other places outside Dhaka, but never got around to do so

btw what does 'neelimon' mean?

Hah hah, you know what, at times I try to read those writings also and try to make inferences about the person who wrote those.

Can’t you read Bengali? Do you live abroad? Where? Where were you born? Which book of Hemmingway are you reading now? I heard the name of Borges but have not got the opportunity to read yet. I'll definitely try to collect the book now and share my feelings with you

Heh heh, yesssss I’ve read this also, but only the Bengali translation; and I still read from this book when I am down.

I’ve read, may be, only a couple of stories by Oscar Wilde, in different text books, and I also have a plan to read his other stories.

You know what, I’ve got a long “to-do” list, and learning Russian is number 3 or 4 in it. I will most certainly learn Russian some time

If you like short stories then Chekhov is a must read, trust me, he is the boss (not that Brother Of Sweet Sister ) of short stories. Russian writers influenced me the most and they have the highest contribution to build up my opinion in different matters. For example, especially after reading the writings Arkadi Gaidar, Maxim Gorky, Nikolai Ostrovsky, I started to think and live in Socialism. I cannot tell you how unbearable pain I had in my mind knowing that Soviet is broken, ruining the dream and sacrifice of so many people. I feel the same pain seeing the reluctantness of most Bengalis regarding our Liberation War. Russian writers also built up the consciousness regarding the working class people in me and my compliance to work for them at some point of my life.

Tolstoy and Chekhov are the first two persons who introduced me to different dimensions of humans’ emotions, and not to hate people who cannot always conform to the societal rules.

Actually I know no English to express these feelings of mine properly.

Ohhh and Russian folk stories are awesome; I liked them most in my childhood.

You like watching movies? What kind of movies do you usually see? And what is DIY?

I stay near the central part of Dhaka… which I think, is the worst part of the city. Dhaka still IS “a building site with a tremendous amount of dust”, besides lots of shopping malls and incredible traffic jam. I hate this city, and I also try to escape from the city whenever I get a chance, to get some fresh oxygen.

Neelimon is a noun, it means, “Blue in color”, good that you asked this question, I consulted a dictionary for the meaning and found this word is masculine

Anyway I chose this nick because of the song:

Jhiko jhiko korhi re
Anchole bandhiya re
Jay Nelimon Guripur-er haat re...

Listening this song, I imagined neelimon as a witty kind of village girl adored by everyone.

Please forgive me for being so late to reply to you, exams are killing me

I liked the forum seeing different threads, but now it seems dead to me now, seems like only you and me are talking in an abandoned place.

Take care, and respond soon
