Can anyone tell me why we are not achieving as much as other Asian communities? We are the lowest achievers in all govt studies report apart from the Afro-Caribbean people. Why??
What’s wrong with us, what’s the solution? We are falling behind in every dept from education, good jobs, to Islamic knowledge. Even in Islamic activities, Bengalis are no where near the status of the Pakistanis, who are the undisputed leaders in Islamic knowledge field. Bearing in mind that Bangladeshi and Pakistanis have roughly the equal of numbers of population in the UK. Look at the media, how many Bangladeshi Islamic spokesperson have you seen appearing on TV, hardly any. They are all bloody Pakistanis. Bangalee Islamic experts have been terrified in appearing in front of TV cameras bcoz they don't have the guts. I was disappointed that no representative from predominately Bangalee Islamic groups e.g. ‘Islamic UK Forum’ sent a speaker to any TV station. Even in discussion programmes on the aftermath on 11th Sept, it’s allways the Pakistanis, who sit on panel. Education. Yes, we are the worst, apart from the Caribbean’s. Why. Many Bangladeshis parents are not interested in the value of education. Starting from the Primary Schools, parents keep their children to stay at home, rather go to school, to look after their younger siblings, whilst the mother is on shopping spree! Children also stay up late after watching late night Hindi films or TV programmes, resulting in being tired in their classrooms. And what about those frequent long trips to Sylhet to see their Nanas and Khalas. Do Ma & Faf have keen interest in their education: not many! The simple fact is we don’t value education as much as the fanatical Indians do. Jobs: oh yes, our traditional jobs even now are in Indian restaurants and in Garment factories, though the garment factory jobs have been declining, still many young people work there, where as Indian Restaurants always has demand for young and old workers. Working long hours, they come home, once a week to visit their families and see their kids, who regard their Papa as a stranger!. Business: That’s a good one. We don’t know what other business to open apart from the usual Indian Restaurants and General groceries store. Pathetic isn’t it! We love opening a new restaurant, just near to an existing one, just to cut off rival's trade; at the end both wind up & go somewhere else. We don’t know or have the know- how to open any other type of business. What is the solution? yes, I know it is slooooly changing but we still need a lot to do. sorry bit long
hi
dude the how old is the eldest bangali born in this country? i reckon its gonna be about 25, 28 max. i say this bcos my brother was the 1st from our village born in this country and he is only 25. what this means is that the first generation of uk born bangladeshis are only just recently arriving onto the job market. you will find that this generation of bangladeshis will find alternative work, and the subsequent generations will be even more successful. i dont know if you went to college and stuff, but at least in my college (predominantly white english) the asians got the best 'A' levels and the banglalis were the best amongst them. as for business, the restuarant trade is a proven formula for us, its a convenient route into self employment. and a lot do very well. we should respect the restaurateurs amongst us, as they are businessmen in their own right. i have a friend who puts 50k into his pocket form his restaurant and takeaway, at the end of the financial year, thats after tax and so on. i, with my education will probably have to work for another 10 yrs to hope for such an income. i went to college with this guy he is only 23. in saying this bangalis are already moving into other forms of business, in my own family for existence, my brothers own a laundry service, a grocery delivery service and between us about ten houses which we rent out. we are by no means the only ones. bangladshis are amongst the youngest immigrants into this country, the pakistanis have been here for at least 2 generations and the indians here for a lot longer. plus the bangladeshis did not receive any grants when arriving into this country, as the indians, pakistanis and chinese did in an effort to encourage them over. as for islam on this i have to agree with you, as i stated in another post, its time we begin to have some confidence in what our islamic teachers taught us as children and not just nod in agreement when the pakistani dude (himself a rare visitor to the masjid) says 'your doing that wrong'
