Cool

I am studying nutrition in the united states and want to know how we can help resolve the problems of malnutrition in Bangladesh. Does anyone know of any great websites i can go to for more info? I am especially looking for agriculture, food supply, and nutrition topics. I would also like to know what is being done to feed the hungry as well. Thanks.

How can we solve malnutrition? hmm how can we stop americans eating more than their fair share lol. MAlnutrition is directly linked to poverty, so i guess you have to start by approaching issues of poverty. You know what might be interesting, gender and malnutrition in the third world. Read the extract below:

Quotes from poor women in Bangladesh

" When i can, i give my husbands and sons more. Men don't understand if food runs short, so i wait till they have eaten"

" A good wife is one who makes sure her husband has enough to eat'

" If a women eats before her husband, she shortens his life"

"Men work harder then women, they need to eat more"

"How can you explain to children that there is not enough to eat...? Whn my son cries i feed him. It is easier to make my daughter understand"

"if there is less i eat less. You have to feed the men more or they beat you. Even my son beats me if there is not enough to eat." (kabeer, 1994, pp.143 -4)

Thumbs up

Thanks Mina for your reply. Are you from bangladesh? I agree that gender plays a huge role in malnutrition, especially in women. Do you know of any specific programs in Bangladesh trying to help? Is there a microcredit program? How can I help? Are there more helpful websites and/or books that you would recommend? I will be a dietitian next year and would really like to work in international programs. Thanks for all of your help!!!

Hi

I am from Bangladesh, but presently living in the UK. I have an interest in international development, but am not particularly concerned with nutrition on it's own.
I'm afraid i can't help you by suggesting any books or websites as I tend to read general texts aimed at human geography and sociology students. I could perhaps suggest some titles if you are interested...
