Dhaka ignored WHO alert on dengue epidemic
By Staff Correspondent

A large number of dengue fever cases in the country escaped detection in the absence of proper diagnostic facilities, revealed a study jointly conducted by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (AFRIMS).

Mixed infection or the presence of more than one kind of virus in blood - out of the four types which cause dengue fever - has the potential for dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) epidemics, said the study, the last of its kind in the country.
The study carried out in Chittagong covered 253 children under 15 years of age during the period September 1996 to June 1997.
It noted that a good number of cases usually termed common 'viral flu' may be dengue fever cases and that the country has every chance of an epidemic of the disease as in some neighbouring countries.
A WHO report on dengue situation since 1995 said that a high percentage of the population of Dhaka and Chittagong has anti-bodies to fight dengue virus type-3, and to a lesser extent, dengue-1 and dengue-2.
The WHO report warned that Bangladesh had some risk and must be alert to signs of any epidemic outbreak.
In Myanmar, Thailand and India, over 19 lakh people were infected by dengue fever and 2,893 of them died of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) since 1995.
In Dhaka, the death toll from dengue fever stood at 13 till yesterday while over 250 people were reportedly infected by dengue.
According to sources, in Thailand 99,120 cases were detected in 1996 and 227 died of DHF, in India 10,223 cases were reported in 1996 and 423 died of DHF, in Myanmar 83,381 cases were detected in 1995, of whom 2,243 died.
