hello... newbie here.
umm, hmm... ah yeah, I bought Lagaan on DVD, sucks-arse! I had to take pain-killers to get past the first 14mins, and then was rewarded with a beautiful song ripped to shreds by the corniest, lamest, lousiest and most utterly banal english lyrics and OTT/mock-operatic ballad it has ever been my displeasure to hear or more accurately, endure. Seriously, I've spent the last 4 weeks quizzing friends, relatives (and now total strangers) about their thoughts on this aweful one-dimensional piece of 'entertainment'. The 'English Gentlemen' were characters carved out of the finest balsa wood, their dialogue (constantly addressing each other by their surnames, when not uttering streams of cliché 'Upper-crust speek') was aweful and the absolute lack of discernable _interest_ among these 'villians' whilst playing the _central_ match, seemed to me to be a riotous piece of subversion on their part! I'm sorry for having ever bought this, but what makes it worse is that others adore this film, they positively glow when reciting the exploits of our 'heroes' (who manage to over come Caste and religious divisions, that have existed - in the context of the 'story' - for atleast a couple of hundred years in a matter of minutes - the touching scene were the guy with the funny right hand bowls a ball that even David Gower would be able to knock for six...). Surely we expect something of weight and depth in the performances of the 'villians', say for instance a brief glimpse into their psyche, to understand them a little and also to see their *interest* in the game a little more clearly. Also should we not expect some refinement in the way the initial 'gang' get together, rather than be thrown back to the 80s habit of everything falling into place in the first scene, thereafter just grinding on towards the inevitable (with the faint hope of closing credits, to hold on to...) Anyway, me think Lagaan stink, me further want me money back! b@staaaaaardssss! /* the writer would like to thank Nescafé and Mars for their longstanding support of his latenight rantings */ |
