languges in the mirror of history
As a student of history, I wish to express my views on the subject of URdu-Hindi. Urdu in its present form is not that old language. Its older versian emerged from prakrit-Pali, spoken in Northern India and which is the mother of probably all Northern Indian Languages. However, with the coming of Muslim it aqcuired a different tenor. Persian, Turkish and Arabic was overwhelmingly used in local language which had no name thus far. But as this new language became popular, people started calling it Urdu which meant Army in Turkish language as it originated in the Muslim armies on account of their interaction with local population. In the post 17th century period it became increasingly popular. Earlier only sufi saints including saints in Bangladesh had used it as a vehicle to spread Islam. But after 17th century, court poets adopted it as a means of expression. Their language had persian idiom and vocublary but a local grammer. Till then there was no language called Hindi. Urdu was the language which was used in the Fort Williams College Calcutta, by the British. They called it hindustani. The script of hindustani was arabic and it used more persian and arabic than sanskrit. In the first of decade of the 19th century, some fanatical hindus from Benaras and Allahabad wrote articles exhorting upon the Brit govt to change the script of hinustani to devnagri- hindi script. They themselve started writing hindustani in devnagri using more sanskrit words. And that was the origin of the language that we see on Indian TV and parliament. Hindus were concerned that if Urdu with its persian and Arabic heritage was used by hindus they would lose connection with their ancient hindu culture. Thats why they invented this language. |

sweeet. So you are saying that Hindi did not exist exist till the 18th century. Nice, where did you find this, Britannica?
And yeah, good to see that you have posted something new instead of bombarding all the posts with that anti-Hindu para of yours. oh, this is anti- Hindu too. All right, one question for you, what is the difference in hating India and hating Hindus. And your options are: a) Hate hindus b) Hate India c) Hate both d) You dont hate anyone, as the Holy Book teaches not to hate any being. |

History should be studied and understood in right perspective.
Is that not true that India was united only under Ashoka (budhist), Khilji(Muslim) and British(Christians). Have u ever mused into the reasons why a Brahmin king cudnt unite India under Hinduism. The reason- intolerance. As regards Urdu-Hindi controversy, I suggest u go to Hindu Universities of Banara and Allahabad and read out the material on the emergence of Hindi. I do not hate anybody. Hindu religion, culture and people have as much right to survive as muslims or other communities. But whatever you guys are doing with Muslims in Gujrat will not be forgotten by our youths. You would never understand the pain that we feel of our brother being burnt alive by Hindu goons of VHP. |

Our youths? Speak for yourself, non-indian. The citizens of my nation are not in your state of bias. If we have a problem, we will work it out, and we are, the VHP is holding a talk with the Central Government and the Muslim leadership. This tendency of yours to club all the Muslims in the same league as yours is wrong.
