I'm worse then you! I can't read or write bangla at all. That's because the only time I went to a Bangla school was junior kindergarten. After that it was French then English school. Now my Dadi is hounding me to learn Bangla. My parents are trying to arouse my interest by telling me all the great books I can read ( I love books) if I learn Bangla. Honestly I would, but Trying to keep french verbs, accents, and all those history lessons straight in my head is work enough. The only thing I know how to write is my name, and even that I forget sometime!
Any more people like me?????? ![]() |

u can type english into bangla - u'll see what i mean if u go there, if the link is correct. i got one of them teach yourself bengali books - one written by an english dude - who speaks fluent bengali - i've seen him speak - but he's got a crappy accent, and it sounds/looks funny comin from an english guy. Anyway, i only read thru the first few chapters - then got bored/ran out of time - but the important thing is i can read letters written in bengali (as long as the handwriting is tidy) by my rellies. But if i reply, i reply in english. ---------- Tender is the touch of someone that you love too much |

I think i know which book your talking about, it's by william Radice, who i believe lectures at soas, School of african asian studies, the only university in the uk which lectures in bengali. Im having the same problem as you i can't get past chapter five. The first five chapters are pretty easy because i've studied bengali on and off as long as i can remember. What im having major difficulties with is conjuncts and spelling because my accent is awful. Umm i think indian bengali is easier to read, but maybe that;s just me.
