yayati, you really should be proud of being a sylheti instead of bagging on it. you seem to have taken a dhakaiya stance on our culture. to say that the sylheti language is for uneducated people is just pathetic.... are you saying all sylhetis are uneducated and uncouth or sumink, cos i can give you a whole list of sylhetis who are not.

its true that shuddo basha is the correct language, and its always good to know it. however, we live in england, and there is very little use for shuddo basha here. i know both, and i use my sylheti a whole lot more! the only reason any of us need to speak any form of bengali in this country now is to converse with our relatives, and all our relatives are sylheti, so sylheti is more appropriate for us.

if you are that intent on learning shuddo only, in an attempt to appear more educated and, erm... couth, maybe you should distance yourself from your family and go and have conversations with yourself, cos you arent gonna have any reason to use it.

Anissa: u got it wrong…I didn’t mean to bag sylheti basha but I am just stating that its for the uneducated people who didn’t bother to learn their real basha…maybe it was because they were lazy or stupid, perhaps both.

Sylheti developed from a village mentality where the beautiful language of bangla people got mangled by folks who didn’t care for it much and made things up as they went along…I think a return to education will help us realize who we are and our identity in the world…just as English and Arab people use their language to make a statement about their ideals and beliefs so we banglas must do the same….

I don’t know how many Pakistanis u have met…but they regard Bengalis as A] Black b] uneducated we must remove this perception of us in the wider world and we can only do it via education…learning about our self-worth and place in the world, becoming aware of our common human identity and our individual bangla one too…!

So I am not dissing anyone really…just our forefathers for being a little lazy and uncouthed…we should hang ard only elite ppl who will show us how to live our lives better like arabs, pakis, Indians and above all WHITES and BLACKS with CHINESE....cuz these ppl know the values of self-worth, we gotta learn from them yo

What do you care what pakis think?... we had a war to get away from them cos they have always treated us as inferior when we should know that we are not. In any case, they are even more uneducated than us.... have you seen the league tables for ethnic minorities in britain lately... we beat them, granted only by 2%, but thats a significant 2%! and also, our women in bangladesh are far more educated than the their women, over 60% of whom remain illietrate in this day and age! forget the pakis.

the only way we are going to move forward in society is if we are proud of who we are... in our case of being sylheti.... dont listen to people who try and put you down. we shouldnt try to imitate others, otherwise we'll forget our own selves, and that always leads to disaster.

Your list of races that you appear to believe to be superior to us, shows that you are either ashamed of who you are, or that you arent comfortable with your own background.

and another thing, so what if we are dark skinned, at least we dont go round marrying our cousins for generations on end and ending up looking severely inbred.

one pakistani guy actually told me in my face that they regarded us banglas as black peasants...of course banglas in pakistan work as menial workers such as cooks etc so they still get to see bengali ppl and judge us this way....we must show them that we are different, educated etc

The point is why do you care what they think? we have nothing to prove to them. they are no better than us. once you realise that, you wont care what ignorant pakis think about you.

when the guy actually said that to you, didnt you realise that HE was the one who had the problem, and if that is representative of all pakis (which I doubt it is), then it is they who need to change, and stop thinking they are better than us.

live your life, and dont think you have to prove anything to anyone. you should be proud of who you are. fine, it is always good to strive for the bangladeshi community to advance, but it is not a good thing to think that we are inferior to other races as a whole, or to think that we have to prove that we are decent people to other races.

what about ppl like fug and khilari who will call ppl like us "bingo" etc don't we have anything to prove to them? And why not?

Every person in the world has a choice to be an example to others or not...to be a role model, we must strive to be that...but ppl like fug have a point don't u think...we shouldnt care about culture or being bengali we should care about being islamic and following arabs as second class citizens in the hope that one day we might have the same awareness as they do....we might have the same knowledge that they have...in order to do this we must forsake our culture/idoms/language for the greater good...we must becomes slves to arabs before becoming slaves to Allah....it is a natural progression according to them...i kinda see their point...its sad, but bangalis have never had fate/power in their own hands anyway....
