Butterfly.S brings up an interesting point.

Not all Bangladeshis are Bengalis and similarly not all Bengalis are Bangladeshis.
Australia, UK, USA, and Canada are all predominantly English speaking countries. But don't forget to take your American to 'Strine dictionary along when you go to Australia. Otherwise strange men would call you "mate" and you won't know whether to go for "Sheila" or "Bloke" at the "loo" after a bad "chook" on the "barbie." :-)

Along the same lines, when someone asks you in english "what language do you speak in BENG-ladesh?", would you answer Bangla or Bengali????? Is there a difference?

And, how many of us correct ppl when they refer to BD as BENG-ladesh as opposed to BUNG-ladesh ?

Personally, I don't make a big deal out of this. I try to pronounce it in the correct way and hope they'd pick up from that. Or correct them when they ask me if they're saying it the right way.

Going overboard with Bengali or Bangla can be costly. You'll frequently find that you don't know the words for common things like chair or table and so on. And even if you do, saying them would seem silly.

I frequently get corrected by mostly Hindi or Urdu speakers how to pronounce my own name! I normally pronounce it without the heavy H sound that they do between the G and the A; however, my defense to them is that it's a noun, it's my name, and I decide how I want to pronounce it :-)

Cheers.

Well, in England, the distinction made between Bengali and Bangla is that Bengali is spoken by those from West Bengal or Calcutta (ie. Hindu Bengalis) whereas I am considered a Bangladeshi and I consider myself to speak Bangla. But the English for the word Bangla is Bengali.
