Hello. This is my first time here, but I'm trying to translate some Bengali song lyrics into English & I'd like to know what "chai'lam" means. I may have some further questions later.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

The Bangla verb "Chawa" has two meanings. 1. To ask for something. 2. To look at something.

So, Chailam means 1. I asked something or 2. I looked at something.

Examples:

1. Ami jante chailam na = I didn't want to know
2. Ami tar dike chailam = I looked at him/her

OK--that's very helpful. If chilam shows the past progressive and aami is me, which definition would fit in the original context?

Aami payey'chilam oi jeyeta aami chai'lam.
Chai'lam, khub'se chai'lam.

Hi

The transliteration is not very clear to me. However assuming that Jeyeta = Jeta and Khub'se = Khub kore, I would translate it as:

I got exactly what I had asked for
I wanted (to have) it. Oh how eagerly I wanted (to have) it!

The original lyric has some grammatical difficulty / unconventionality / mistakes with tense of verbs.
