LAHORE, Pakistan -- Police investigating a spate of killings of Shiite Muslims in Pakistan have arrested the leader of one of the country's most militant Sunni Muslim groups.

Azim Tariq, leader of Sipah-e-Sahaba, or Guardians of the Friends of the Prophet, was arrested from his home in eastern Punjab province on Saturday, said Zahid Qasim, a member of the group's ruling council.

Tariq's Sunni group is considered one of the most violent and well-armed religious groups operating in Pakistan.

"We haven't been told why, but we believe he has been detained because of the recent killings," he said.

In the past week, five Shiite Muslims have been killed in separate incidents in eastern Punjab province and in the southern port city of Karachi.

It was not clear whether police have filed charges against Tariq.

Authorities say that the relatives of some of the victims have accused Tariq of ordering the killings.

In Pakistan, where Sunni Muslims dominate, there has been constant feuding between militant members of the two sects.

In recent years religiously motivated violence has left hundreds dead.

Pakistan's military government, which seized power in October 1999, has been unable to stem the fighting between militant groups of Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

Also another main problem is that there is too much weapons in Pakistan. In Afghansitan war Pakistani civilians got weapons to fight with Afghan against Russia and at that time lot of groups that promote Jehad are also came into being at the end of war in Afghanistan these groups focus there energy in Kashmir. It is good to do Jehad but sometime it is dangerous for peace in pakistan too if some many groups with so many weapons exist in Pakistan ....
