Scot faces trial on 'ludicrous' Egypt coup plot charges
CAMERON SIMPSON http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/arch...02-0-3-15.html THE Scots father of an IT consultant about to stand trial for aiming to overthrow the Egyptian government yesterday dismissed the charges as "ludicrous". Ian Nisbet, 28, is one of three men from London who will appear in court on Sunday accused of being members of the Liberation party and aiming to "rise against" the state. If convicted, Mr Nisbet and the other two Britons, who have all claimed to have been tortured while in custody, could face up to 15 years in prison. However, his parents protested his innocence after visiting him for the first time since his arrest in April this year. Mr Nisbet's father, Alistair, 59, an IT customer services manager from Tayport, Fife, said: "He is innocent, like the others, and shouldn't be there. If you made a stage play out of it people would not believe such a thing could happen. One guy is charged with owning a computer, but he works for an IT company." Mr Nisbet was detained along with Reza Pankhurst, 27, an IT consultant, and Maajid Nawaz, 26, a law student. They have been charged with "promoting by speech and writing the goals" of the Liberation party, also known as Hizb ut-Tahrir, and were among 86 men arrested. The group, founded in 1952, is outlawed in most Middle Eastern countries, and Egyptian authorities blame it for an attempted coup in 1974 and a number of terrorist operations. The Britons are accused of establishing a clandestine network to obstruct the rule of law and constitution, possessing opposition leaflets, computers to propagate their message, and promoting the overthrow of the government to establish Islamic rule. Earlier this year, the wives of the three men said their husbands had been blindfolded, handcuffed, subjected to electric shocks, and left on bare concrete floors in solitary confinement for days on end. Mr Nisbet and Mr Pankhurst were working with an internet company, and Mr Nawaz was studying at Alexandria University. -Oct 18th |
