Light rail-based Mass Transit Project: CDGK and Chinese firm sign agreement

KARACHI (May 15 2004): CDGK and China National Machinery and Equipment Group (CNMEG) have signed an agreement on Friday for the construction of Corridor-1 of light rail based Mass Transit Project.

The estimated cost of the project is $568 million, which will be completed within four and a half years. The corridor-I, spreading over a total area of 15.2 km from Sohrab Goth to M W Tower, has been designed on both elevated as well as underground basis.

The route from Sohrab Goth to Teen Hatti (8 km) will be on elevated pattern, while the remaining corridor from Teen Hatti to Tower (7.2 km) on underground basis.

This corridor initially will facilitate about 0.4 million commuters with the fast, efficient and economical transport service that would later be expanded to 1 million commuters.

The City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan provided this information, while talking to newsmen after signing the agreement. Senior Vice President, Gu Zhengxie signed the agreement on behalf of CNMEG.

Speaking at the occasion, Naimatullah pointed out that the complete Mass Transit Project was constituted of five corridors and first corridor proved to be successful, the contract for the second one, from Orangi to Cantt. Station (13.4 km) could also be given to the same Chinese firm.

Naimatullah mentioned that the project had long been pending but due to keen interest shown by the President Musharraf and Governor Ishratul Ibad it had now been initiated.

Prominent among others who attended the ceremony were Chinese Consul General, Sun Chun Ye, DG Mass Transit, Malik Zaheerul Islam, EDO Transport, Dr Tahir Soomro, EDO Investment and Enterprises Promotion, Raeesuddin Paracha, EDO works and Services, Shoaib Siddiqui, Chinese delegation's leader Huang Yuming and Design and Construction Engineer of CNMEG, Bai Yun.
