Umair Aslam.
Wassalaam Pakistani Bhai,

I am from Bangladesh but currently in the US. I have made many Pakistani friends here in the US while in college, and learnt to speak, read and write Urdu during my time there. I have lived a great amount of my college life with Pakistanis, and have a good understanding of what your sentiments and feelings are regarding many issues. I will try and touch upon just a few of them. DISCLAIMER: Even though I tend to speak on behalf of everyone, if any bengali decides that they don't agree with me then I apologize and request that you voice your disagreement in this forum.

i) The common Pakistani sentiment is that 1971 has happened, and there is nothing one can do about it now. We should move on and revel in our Islamic unity. Now this is the very sentiment that drives a Bangladeshi crazy! If I came and raped any member of your family, and later my son came and told your son, "Hey dude, what's happened has happened.... let's move on." Would you or your family ever forgive mine especially since there is not even a trace of shame or guilt? Where was the muslim Ummah when people were being killed and women raped in bangladesh? Why wasn't there an outcry among the people of pakistan to stop the war. Why was it that we had to seek a Non-Islamic nation's help in stopping this genocide on us. Now on top of that when you trivialize an incident that was but just a generation ago and of such staggering atrocity, we can't but let the hate you describe boil within us.

ii) There are many incidents where I myself have had to bear the brunt of being a bangali among my pakistani friends. I will relate just one of them here for fear of putting people to sleep if I try to touch upon them all. During my first couple of months in college we were celebrating Eid-ul-Adha. This was back when I had zero Urdu knowledge. During the Eid prayers I had mentioned to a pakistani friend that I was feeling homesick and since they were the only muslim people I knew, if they were going to go for dinner later that day, to take me as well. When he went and suggested this to the pakistani group later, another pakistani (who later became my roommate and we're very good friends now) said that they shouldn't call me because they'd have to speak in english and what was the point, I wouldn't be able to get their jokes and socialize anyway. Well I ofcourse didn't know about all this and didn't find out till years later when we became very good friends. So tell me now, where was the muslim brother in me that he couldn't recognize. You may argue this was a rare incident and he is not representative of your average pakistani, but I beg to differ.

iii) There are many Bangladeshi nationals in Pakistan who are trying to make a decent living, some albeit illegally. I have heard numerous stories about them being harassed. From what I've heard bangalis in general do not hold white collar jobs in pakistan, but they are generally people trying to make an honest living. I've heard stories where pakistanis demand passports or other paperwork from, for example, a fruitseller knowing fully well that he's illegal. They then take his fruits without paying with threats of calling the police. Now be honest.... is this a stray incident of extortion of a helpless person, or are such bangalis regularly subjected to such ridicule?

iv) Leave alone bengalis, pakistanis make fun of other pakistanis, if they have the remotest connection to bangladesh. I have a friend whose father was a businessman and before 1971 used to visit bangladesh quite frequently. Even today, he and his family are called bengalis and that too with a heavy hint of ridicule. Another pakistani friend's granddad held a high position in the then East Pakistan government, and his mom spent a few years there growing up. Those 7 years in Bangladesh by his mom is used to label him as being bengali, and I could see the sheer embarrasment that he felt whenever he was called that.

So tell me now, if you really consider us brethren, then why such a stigma associated with the bengali entity. I could be wrong, but all these "muslim brethren" comments are just pretentious and false. Where there should be a national guilt for the plight of the bangalis, pakistanis ridicule bangalis for the language they speak, the food they eat, their looks, their music, their existence as a whole. So please look into yourself and don't pretend for once that all that I mentioned above does not exist. If your feelings towards us is so undignified where you yourself were the oppressor, how do you expect us to even consider changing our attitude as a whole?

But even before we talk about bengalis, within pakistan there are insurmountable differences among people from different regions. What drives people to form an organization like MQM? I am not talking about the terroristic group that it had later become, but of that group of educated professionals who got together to fight for the right of Muhajirs. I thought the whole reason Jinnah wanted a separate muslim state was so that the muslim minority would not be discriminated upon. But lo and behold the very same thing he feared takes place on pakistani soil now. Incidents of discrimination is rampant in pakistan among its own provinces.

I have made many pakistani friends in college and even today I mostly fraternize with pakistanis. On an individual level we have gone beyond national origins, but when it comes to entire peoples, it is downright silly to expect pakistanis to change their attitude anytime soon.

Umair Aslam.

This guy is unlikely to ever come back and read his post (above)

But the point he makes about "being friends with Pakistanis" is made so simply...

ultimately it will never happen whilst bangladeshi and pakistani idiots exist who insist on making enemies of each other.

luckily many bangalis no longer feel this way and the more time that goes by, perhaps the easier it will become to put the events of 1971 into perspective; historical evidence that the point of Islam is forgotten and it is used to further the desires of individual's and also the masses.

clearly many people in Bangladesh and Pakistan have 1st hand memories of the time, as do people's families etc

and the more time that goes by the more perspective will be gained by those learning about the situation. Insha'allaah.

Salaam,

I believe a study of history will enlighten you with regards the mutual antagonism which generally exists between Bangladeshi's and Pakistani's.

In my opinion, some of the outstanding issues are:

1. The failure of Pakistan to make an unequivical and official state-to-state apology to Bangladesh, for the undeniable atrocities committed by Pak forces in 1971. Thus implicitly denying responsibility.

2. The failure of Pakistan to address the issues regarding the division of financial and material assets worth billions of dollars. Assets to which Bangladesh and Bangali's are entitled to. Both from a moral and legal point of view.

3. The trial of various Pakistani war criminal's in it's armed forces. Criminal's responsible for documented acts of wanton death, destruction, pillage and rape in Bangladesh.

4. The outlandish and widespread fabrication of history taught in Pakistan. Whereby responsibility for the crackdown and resultant genocide is heaped on India and alleged conspiracies. A history in which Bangali's are portrayed as traitor's and Pakistani's attempt to justify their criminal and repugnant actions.

This point can be seen on this very forum, where various Pakistani's have come up with all manner of weird and wacky historical untruths to hide the culpability of Pakistan. Including one gentleman who persisted in calling Bangladesh, 'East Pakistan'. This is not conjusive toward warmer mutual relations.

Islamic brotherhood doesn't come into this. Matters of justice, truth, responsibility and recompense must take precedence if Bangla-Pak relations are to improve.

In any case, Bangladesh will always have to give more attention and weight to our relationship with India. If for no other reason than geographic proximity, a common border, important economic ties and the generally peaceful mindset of our Bangali ppl, and hence our nation.

OYe Amar,

when your stupid Prime Minister came to Pakistan, and held talks with Mushy, Mushy even told her to resolve all the hatered between Pak and Bangla deSh, he even asked her if she wanted a formal apology, and she said no its okay, and it has been accepted. But Mushy still apologized for all the torture that the Pakistani generals till to the innocent Bengalis in East Pakistan, what else do you want? what?

You all bengalis are ddumb fukz, what else do you want? We even offered you stupids an apology, which solves your issue right there, and no you guys still want to drag this on and on, you guys have no reason to hate us, you just do, its just that you guys are jealous of our progress.

You are entitiled to nothing, you guys claim 4.3$ b dollar, but do we claim anything from India? We had assests there ? What about that? But we are not poor to ask them for the money back, so I suggest you guys stop the rantin and cryin about the money, because you wont be getting it!

Bangladesh was a traitor, they left us without telling us, they sold us out! You all Bengalis are sell outs, nothing else, just sell outs! Man if you guys wanted a seperate state, you should have told us! Like we told India, but even after that, they had to fight us, and we lost a lot of lives and millions of people! But Bangladesh? We lost our soldiers to fight for your land!@ yOU GUYS are traitors nothing else, you betrayed us!

This is just sad! How we helped you create East Pakistan, but you guys had to back stab us! There was no effort what so ever in creating East Pakistan by any of you, the effort was all done by "Jinnah", if he ignored your side, you wouldnt have Bangladesh today! And all your illegal Bengalis in Pakistan are just annoying!

Dear Guddling,

You tell me, if you were illegal in the U.S, would you have a white collar job? Would you be treated like a Prince upon discovery as an illegal immigrant? I dont think so, I am a Pakistani, I live in Canada, and No you would not be treated very nicely, there are possiblities that you could be deported or even banned from the country, but deportation is a major option! Its the same case in UAE, where my dad lives, and i've lived there all my life, I see so many Bengalis AND Pakistanis getting deported because they get into the country illegally!

and brother, if a person is illegal, its obvious they dont have the paper work or a passport! Its not only Bengali illegals in the country, there are many arabs and many different nationalities that are not being mistreated but are asked politey to register with the Authorities, and apply for a work permit. Thats the legal way of doing things.

How in the sane world can you even think of getting a white collar job if your illegal? Brother, that was just stupid!

Aliens urged to get registered with NARA

Aliens urged to get registered with Nara

KARACHI (May 14 2004): The National Aliens Registration Authority (NARA) has called upon aliens living in Pakistan, specially in Karachi, to get themselves registered with the authority to escape any police action.

[b]Director of Nara Mazhar Shaikh during a discussion on "importance, issues and problems of aliens' registration" here on Thursday said these registration cards would be issued for one year which could be extended to three years period. One can apply for three years as well, he said.

This card, fee for which has been reduced to Rs 250 from Rs 1000, could be used in place of National Identity Card (NIC) and domicile for daily matters like academic admissions for their children, etc.

He said these registered aliens could also apply for work permit against a fee of Rs 2500 for each permit. Earlier, the fee was Rs 5,000. [b]

He advised Bengalis in Pakistan to apply for citizenship under the Citizen Act after getting registration card from Nara to become genuine Pakistanis.

Those Bengalis would be accepted as Pakistanis who prove that they have been living in Pakistan since December 16, 1971. However, they would have to go through this registration process.

NARA to be reorganised on scientific lines

KARACHI (May 22 2004): National Aliens Registration Authority (NARA) will be reorganised to make it more effective and undertake registration of illegal immigrants on scientific lines.

This was stated by Director General Nara Dr Abdul Ghaffar Soomro while presiding over the meeting here on Friday which discussed in detail the problems in the registration of illegal immigrants in the country.

He told the meeting that a force will be created on the lines of police in the next fiscal year for the NARA to expedite registration of aliens. In the first phase 100 officials will be recruited for this force, he added.

Dr Soomro said the NARA officers will be handed the powers of judicial magistrate to ensure smooth and swift registration process.

The meeting was told that Nara has registered more than 100,000 illegal immigrants living in Pakistan till May 2004 and this process has been expedited.

The participants were informed that more than one million illegal immigrants were living in Sindh and NARA has constituted mobile teams and set up regional offices to facilitate aliens to register themselves to get legal protection and work peacefully.

He said that survey of factories and industrial units has begun to locate illegal immigrants.

The factory owners have also been communicated to co-operate with NARA and register their workers of foreign origin. He asked NARA officials to co-operate with illegal immigrants who seek registration and do not create problems for them in this process.
