A row has broken out in the western Indian state of Gujarat over a move ordering schools to subscribe to an allegedly right-wing Hindu magazine.

Authorities in the western Indian state of Gujarat have rejected demands by Christian and Muslim groups to withdraw the controversial order.

Minority community leaders say the weekly, Sadhana, is a mouthpiece of the Hindu nationalist organisation, RSS.

The RSS is seen by many as the ideological parent organisation of India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is also the ruling party in Gujarat.

Christian missionaries and other activists have described the Gujarat Government's decision to introduce the Hindu weekly in state-run schools as unconstitutional.

They have also decided to move the court if the government failed to reverse its decision soon.

The convenor of the United Christian Forum for Human Rights and a Jesuit priest, Cedric Prakash, told the BBC that the directive was an attempt to impose Hindu ideology on students of different religions.

He also took exception to the government asking school authorities to use official aid and grant money to pay for the subscription costs.

But Gujarat Education Minister Anandiben Patel denied there was any attempt to force non-Hindu students to read the weekly which she described as a "social magazine".

This is not the first stand-off between the BJP government in Gujarat and minority groups.

Christian groups had charged the state administration with being soft on some militant Hindu groups during widespread anti-Christian violence nearly two years ago.

The Gujarat Government also provoked a row last year when it allowed government employees to take part in the activities of the RSS.

Two weeks ago, Bangladesh's foreign ministry lodged a formal complaint with its Indian counterpart against Mayer Dak, a newspaper published from Calcutta. In a letter to the MEA, Bangladesh requested that the Government of India ban the newspaper since it's "spreading disinformation about Bangladesh in India and internationally." Typically, the ministry suggested that Indian authorities should avoid making "too much noise" while taking steps to dismantle the publication. According to Mayer Dak, some months ago, Abu Tayeb, the "Council of Press" of the Consulate of Bangladesh, Calcutta, made a threatening phone call to its editor, whose response was: "We won't submit to any kind of pressure, the newspaper will continue as it is. We will promote the paper further internationally."

I got to know all this through a pal who forwarded me the press release of the Human Rights Congress for Bangladeshi Minorities, an international, non-political NGO dedicated to the welfare of the minorities in Bangladesh, which protested the attempt by the government of Bangladesh to shut down the newspaper. You see, Mayer Dak doesn't just present news events from Bangladesh, it focuses on the plight of the minority communities residing in what was once East Pakistan. Considering the hullabaloo unfailing raised by our great and good when it comes to decrying perceived threats against the rights of the minorities in India, it was no surprise that no national newspaper bothered with this attack on the freedom of the press. For the major minority community in Bangladesh is Hindu.

The HRCBM is a Santa Clara-based organisation that investigates and exposes human rights violations in Bangladesh, and whose mission is to end the discrimination and xenophobia existing in that country. For the HRCBM, "minorities" constitutes the Hindus, Christians, what-have-you's in BD. However, unlike NGOs, I'm neither great nor good -- I'm interested only in the predicament of the Hindus stuck in BD, no matter that the majority of Hindus, especially in India, are the apertures on the nether parts of their rear torsos. I urge you to visit the org's website and read the details of attacks on Hindu temples/property and the rape and abductions of Hindu women in BD. To give you an idea of the condition of Hindus in the Islamic country, I reproduce terribly few cases:


On October 6, 2000, Muslim devotees, after offering namaaz at the Gajipur Jama Masjid, strolled across to the Hindu Kali temple, destroyed the puja pandal, smashed the idols, and desecrated the prasad. They were armed with axes, knives, swords and sticks (collected so quickly on their exit from the mosque) and continued the jehad by looting nearby Hindu-owned shops.
On October 1, 1998, Muslims attacked the Durga procession at Agrabad with firearms and bombs. Over a hundred Hindus were injured as the Islamists destroyed 20 trucks carrying images of the Goddess.
On March 29, 2000, Malarani Roy of Karagola village was abducted by Muslims. She was brutally beaten up and gang-raped. The local police found her, but refused to register a case.
On June 26, a group of Muslims directed Smriti Rani Saha of Sirajganj town to migrate to India. When she refused, she was abducted, gang-raped and brutally murdered.
On November 29, 1999, teenaged Ranjana Roy of Chandpur city was abducted by Shibli Noman, who forced her to convert to Islam and marry him.
On July 25, 1998, Muslims abducted Sheema Rani Sarkar and released her 45 days later after receiving ransom from her husband. Not only was Sheema repeatedly raped but she was also converted to Islam.
On May 26, 2000, Indrajit Kumar Biswas of Harishpur was stabled to death by a Muslim gang.
On May 28, Debasish Saha of Poradaha was fatally shot by a Muslim gang.
On June 4, Mayaram Tripura of Balipara was shot dead by local Muslims.

I live in an area with 40 % hindus and belive me not a single hindu have ever been persecuted, infact hindus enjoy high status and weild a lot of power in the area, so much so that no muslims is allowed in a hindu house, if one does then hindus take up their arms, hindus do this in a muslim dominated country is astonishing, hindus bangladesh are in paradise compared to muslims in india

well the reason i can think of is migration or forced conversion which we dont see in india in india muslims are increasing

if this hindu enters thier home coz they know this hindu is a friend and will not harm them like many others

my only solution would be all muslims in india should have fled india when they had a chance and hindus to india trust me south asia would have been a much safer place

shiva: U R A bunghole. first of all i remember babri mashjid. second of all i have hindu friends who launder money to india buy properties there send their children their for study and sometimes marriage. but their business is in Bangladesh! and they pledge their allegiance to VAROTH MATHA(India). yes..few of my very close buddies are hindus. and i have watched them very closely. personally they r nice and i like them but what they do is simply equivalent to 'rajakari'. so up urs.

and yes people get raped and murdered and robbed in Bangladesh, but a specific group or religion is never targetted. muslims are victims as well as those from other religion. as a matter of facts percentage wise muslims are victimized more than other religion. and wisecrack 'rajakars' like you yell out human right violatins so to benefit your own self and your varothMatha. even in your righting you show pride in the fact that Pricks(Hundi Fundamentalists) like you in India are destroying mosjid, churches, seikh temples; indian soldiers are killing, raping people of other religion. so "hindus like U" who pledge their allegiance to india should be booted brought to trial and punished for treason. you are worse than the rajakars of 1971. most of you fled to India to save your ass, and then came back to commit treason, and stur up disturbances in the country.
