Question

Assalam u Alaikum,

I would like to share the views of the people as to how Islam was introduced in Bangladesh. As far as Pakistan is concerned, Islam was introduced in 712 AD, in Sindh by the invasion of Muhammed bin Qasim. He invaded the land stretching from Sindh to Multan in Punjab. Later from 1000 AD, onwards Pakistan saw the invasions of Sultan Ghaznavi, Sher Shah Suri, Moghuls and a hoard of others. During most of these invasions Northern India, including current Pakistan were part of those empires. That explains the introduction of Islam in Pakistan, and India's North Western states like Uttar Pardesh. Muslims are in majority in Pakistan and Indian other states, near Pakistani land, but after that there is a large gap, where hindus are in majority, and then again in Bangladesh muslims are in majority. According to my knowledge, the muslim empires which existed in the sub continent, only mughals were able to extend their land to Bangladesh.

I would like to know, how Islam was introduced in Bangladesh?

Hi Zaavia

As-salam alaikum.

Unlike the north-western part of the south asian subcontinent, Islam was NOT spread in Bengal by victorious central asian adventurers.

Islam was preached in Bengal by the following groups of people.

1. Arab merchants - who maintained a marine trade link with Malaya, Ceylon and Bengal ( Chittagong, Barishal etc coastal areas of Bangladesh).

2. Arab Sayyeds - who are persecuted by various rulars of middle east and found shelter in Bengal.

3. Central asian Sufis - winning hearts of people by their simplicity and virtue.

4. Various Saints - most prominents are Shahjalal Yemeni(in Sylhet), Shah Amanat(in North Bengal), Khan Jahan Ali(in South Bengal).

This is how Islam was spread in this part of world.

Bye
