Question

Birmingham host a great deal of Pakistani community. Some of them migrated to
England after the partition of sub-continent into two indipendent states and some
after and before the construction of world's bigest ever earth Dam "Mangla" near the
Jehlam. The immigrants in that particular area are used to intermariage (first
cousins). After so many years the authorities in the Birmingham have realized that
premature birth among pakistani is wide spread and thus have concluded that it is
happening due to marriages among the cousins. And a so called Expert
Mohammad Walji is stressing the pakistani community to avoid such kinds of
marriages, which is not recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). I like to
correct him through this post that he is not right or perhapse has little knowledge of
Islam. In the Holy Qur,an it is stated, that maternal and paternal uncles, aunt's off
spring may marry one another. So the reason that retarted children have any
relation with intermarriages is unfounded. There would be some other reasons of
disability of children in the Pakistani community of Birmingham. The marriage is
very old tradition which goes back to the time of Adam and Eve. Some sayings are
very popular among the people that at the time of Adam and Eve they were used to
marry their first day,s of son and daughter with the second day's son and
daughter", if this is true then whole humanity should long have been
converged/transformed into a disable society.

Well it has been scientifically PROVEN that marriage between cousins does not cause birth defects or any such nonsense. This has upset a lot of ppl in the west cos they can't handle the facts.

There are still a lot of un-educated ppl who believe this kind of nonsense. Years of research (and I mean 2 decades) of research has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that such old wives tales are wrong.

Despite it being against the law in this country. The facts are that there is no such proof that it'll cause an increase in defects. Also the defects which are present in the pakistani community should also be prevalent throughout the world and not just in Birmingham. This poses the question what is the real reason for these miscarriages and defects.

Is it that the health authorities want to hide the real truth that the true reason is due to their treatment of asians in the health service?

Salam,

When we studied Genetics in high school we were taught that the probability of birth defects go up nearer the relationship between the couple is. Made sense to me then.

As for what Islam says, it does encourage us to get married outside and bring down certain wrong societal barriers we have. Marriage between cousins is NOT forbidden but even for the sake of gene pool expansion, we should look towards marrying outside our own families. Even across racial lines if possible.

Anyone from Medical Science care to elaborate?

Assalam-o-Alliakum

My elder two sisters are doctors. I have 4 sisters 2 younger and 2 older.
So they also study about that and do explain me that how genes work.... And I do believe because of them that cousine marriages increase the chances of defacts in the new born baby.
My marriage will be with a cousine too because I got love a girl that is my cousine ..... but ofcourse there are 100s of people how do not get effected from the increase chances of defacts so I will also hope that Allah will put me on those 100s of people.
Also in our relative there are 2 such couple those have cousine marrages and have abnormal children....
