NEW DELHI: - A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a missile scientist who advocates nuclear weapons as a war deterrent, was sworn in as India's 12th president Thursday.

Although Indian government is trying to wash its anti-Muslim impression in the world by claiming to elect a Muslim to the highest constitutional office, the fact is that Kalam is a son of Muslim parents who has embraced the Hindu beliefs of India's majority.

Born into a Muslim family, Kalam does not consider himself as a Muslim. He reads Hindu scriptures each day, is a vegetarian and claims to be a "brahmacharya," a Hindu concept referring to someone who has given up all worldly pleasures, including sex and marriage.

In his acceptance speech, Kalam said India should brace itself to face the growing threats posed by terrorism, internal conflicts and unemployment, and should have a long-term vision to transform itself into a developed country.

"To face these challenges, there must be a vision to ensure the focused action of one billion citizens of this great country with varied capabilities," he said.

Kalam took the oath of office given by Supreme Court Chief Justice B.N. Kirpal in India's Parliament building. The 20-minute ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his cabinet members, as well as legislators and diplomats.

Kalam was elected last Thursday. Both the Hindu nationalist-led governing coalition and the major opposition Congress party had backed the 70-year-old military scientist. The new president also symbolizes his country's political and strategic ambitions. For more than four decades, Kalam worked in India's defence laboratories, spearheading the country's space and nuclear-capable missile program.

He was part of the team that conducted five underground nuclear tests in May 1998 that triggered a chain reaction of global criticism, economic sanctions and matching tests by neighbouring Pakistan.

"Nuclear deterrents on both sides have helped avert a war," Kalam said at a news conference on June 19, after he was named as the presidential candidate. Kalam strongly advocates scientific education, and invited more than 100 schoolchildren to Thursday's ceremony.

For many Indians, Kalam's rise - from humble beginnings as the son of an illiterate boatman in southern Tamil Nadu state to the top of India's scientific and political establishments - symbolizes the strength of India's democracy.

Although his post is largely ceremonial, the president often plays a crucial role. If there is a tied vote in Parliament, his verdict is final. He can call elections or decide which party gets the chance to form a government.

Kalam enjoys Indian classical music and is an accomplished player of the veena, a sitar-like stringed instrument. With his gray shoulder-length hair falling over his collar, his casual, short-sleeved shirts and flip-flop sandals, Kalam is expected to bring a note of informality to the presidential palace.

The choice of Kalam, say critics of Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, was to paper over the anti-Muslim image that the government acquired after Hindu-Muslim violence broke out in the western state of Gujarat in February.
