I don't quite get bangladesh history since they were freed in 1971...only a matter of couple of years.
The details I find out about Bangladesh's history is not enough memory. When people ask me about Bangladesh and it's history, I just go blank in my head.

That’s easy. Bangladeshi history is basically a non-event since independence. A story of coups, corruption and misadministration, whoever comes into power. Basically the story of any third world country.
Although we can be proud we are one of the few third world Muslim nations with a working (though ineffective) parliamentary democracy and a vibrant culture.

Bangladeshis, and i can only vouch for those living in the west, aren't taught anything of our history except for the fight for independence in 1971 as Mujer clearly mentions. Theres so much more to our history, from pre-muslim periods, throughout muslim rule (which Palash's article explains really well), British rule and the fight for partition leading on into Pakistan. (let's not forget that the foundation of the muslim league took place in dhaka, and the bengalis were the most ardent supporters of pakistan). I don't know why these important areas of our history are neglected, but it certainly owes a little to politics. Parties like the Awami League need to concentrate exclusively on the independence war as it validates their claim to power, how Mujibur Rahman brought the bangladeshis to freedom. Unfortunately, that is often at the expense of the rest of our long history. In the west however, those who go to bangla school learn language skills and thats it. we can only gather information about history from our relatives,a few books and the net. How this can be solved, i don't know, but everyone interested can make an active effort to learn for themselves history beyond just the independence war. Oh and theres more to history than jus politics and coups ![]() like social, economics and religious aspects. [Edited by rez on 1st April 2003 at 21:43]

![]() Its quite a fair potrayal of the history of Bangladesh from the days before the 71 war right upto the assasination of Zia. The writer was in bd and was in close contact with most of the political actors with some being his best friends, a worth read

Yeah I read "Bangladesh, Legacy of Blood". Definately a good read. But mostly negative aspects of our political system and history. I guess thats all we are, a bunch of power hungry murderers..... and we are one of the poorest nations in thw world... ohe well..
