I'm just reminiscing about my childhood today, so here's something else for people to think about. What weird/wonderful/or even normal things did you love to eat when you were little. I Bdesh there where these lovely sweets with little bits of desiccated coconut and I used to love them. Haven't seen them for years though. There were also these other little things which are difficult to describe but I'll have a go. I think we referred to them as 'bil-a-yer lengur', translated meaning cats tails. They had a flour / pastry base and looked a bit like Nik-Niks (the crisps that is) and were covered in gur (molasses) and were damn yummy. My mouth is watering even now just thinkig about it. And what about ozmi (the sooty sour stuff that you (or I) ate with salt ? Everyone used to say you get cancer from eating it. I liked it though.

In England, I remember, mojos, sugar paper, popping candy, highland toffee. There are many many more, how about you guys help me remember all those other wierd things we used to eat, and might still eat ?

Creamy Almond and Semolina Pudding

Ingredients:

100g blanched almonds (soaked for at least two hours)
1.25 litres milk
240g single cream
30ml semolina, medium or fine
1/2 tsp crushed or powdered cardamom seeds
A few strands of saffron
100g granulated sugar
2 tbsp toasted almond flakes for garnishing

Method:

In a food processor, grind the almonds along with water to make a smooth almond mixture. Mix with it one cup (240ml) of milk and process into a flowing almond milk.

Bring the rest of the milk to the boil in a heavy-based pot. Sprinkle in the semolina, stirring constantly so that no lumps are formed, and then pour in the single cream and almond milk.

Reduce the heat to moderately low and simmer until the pudding is reduced to one-third its original consistency.

Add the sugar, saffron and cardamom, and remove from the heat.
Beat with a whisk if you think that the texture is somewhat clotted and cool to room temperature. Pour into small serving bowls. Garnish with toasted almonds or cream, and serve.
