Halal & Haram Food Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Halal Food" means food or product that contains NO pork, lard, bacon, ham, alcohol or any of their byproducts. "Haram Food" is not Permissible for Islamic consumption. Muslims must seek "Halal" and and avoid "Haram".
There is a fact about food ingredients that all muslims must know. As we may know that the prepared, canned, and frozen food have some addictives, enzymes, emulsifiers and some other chemical materials. These materials are either prepared or derived from plants or animals and some are synthetical. Hence, one has to find out what type of animal has been used for the preparation of these materials. If the source is pork, then definitely, it becomes haram (unlawful) for muslims to use or eat that kind of food.
The following list of Classified Ingredients are widely used in the Food Industries. Some of these ingredients are Halal (lawful), some are Mash-Booh (suspected), and some are Haram (unlawful). Please note that this is a partial list.

We have done our best to insure that the information we preset here is accurate and lawful to the islamic prospective, but if you find otherwise please let us know.

If the food items are Mash-Booh (suspected to be eaten) or you are not sure about the status of a particular ingredient, you should call or write to the manufacturer of the product to verify the source of that ingredients. Usually the names and addresses of the companies and the bakeries are found on the food labels.

Salam,

Brother,

I would like to point out there is the matter of how the animal was slaughtered. Most Sheikhs (Religious scholars) believe that if the animal has not slaughtered in the proper way (Islamic or Kosher ways), the food prepared with it is still haram.

Whether you follow the prinicpal or not is your decision? Just wanted to point it out.

Jazakallah

Hello,

Yes this is quite an extensive list. However we were recently sent a letter from an islamic group saying that the drink PEPSI is haram as it contains pepsin. Is this true?

Please do confirm us as soon as possible if you happen to have the knowlege for it. I WOULD LIKE TO STOP MY BROTHER BEFORE IT GOES ANY FURTHER.

If the food contains non-pig meat, what then?

Salam,

Br. Star,

It depends on what opinion you follow.

Some people say as most of the people here are people of the book we can eat the meat (in a predominantly Christian or jewish country). I don't follwo this opinion.

Some scholars say, that since in most cases no other deity is mentioned during slaughtered, we can eat the meat (i.e. non-pig meat). If Allah's name is mentioned during slaughter thats better, however if none is mentioned its OK. I also disagree with this opinion.

Most scholars are in agreement that the Slaughter involves the method of slaughter also. So Allah's name has to be mentioned and the slaughter has to be performed in a particular fashion (the whole head cannot be severed and so on. I am not really sure as to what it involves.) Kosher meats follow the same style. SO Kosher and Muslim styled slaughtering is only Halal. I follow this school of though in this regard.

You have to make that decision.

Allah hafez
