LUMS makes it to CSIDC top 10!
"Shop Easy" project, designed and implemented by students of Lahore University of Management Sciences, was selected for World Finals of IEEE Computer Society’s fourth annual International Design Competition(CSIDC 2003), starting from today in Washington D.C. The LUMS team made it to the top 10, out of more than 170 teams from some of the best universities of the world. To reach the finals, LUMS beat some heavy weights like Carnegie Mellon, Iowa State, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Florida at Gainesville, University of Massachusetts at Boston, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, Delft University, Nanyang Technological University, University of British Columbia, University of Hong Kong and University of Queensland.
CSIDC 2003 required undergraduate students around the world to design a special purpose computer-based device to solve a real-world problem. According to Prof. Alan Clements, Chairman of the CSIDC Committee, "These groups of students are truly among the best from around the world. Winning the competition will not be easy and they will have to make a great effort at the World Finals".
The LUMS team was advised by Dr. Zartash A. Uzmi of the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Undergraduate students Tashfeen Suleiman, Danial Ranjha, Haaris Durrani and Talha Zaman designed and implemented the project, and will be presenting it at the World Finals this week. Says Dr. Ashraf Iqbal, Head of the Computer Science Department at LUMS, “It is the right combination of bright students and high quality faculty that has led to this achievement. But this is just the start, and we will strive for even more accomplishment in the future.”
