Salam to all

A lot of people from Sylhet, despise those from Dhaka beacuse of the way they tend to be treated when they go to Dhaka. This is something quite widespread amongst Sylheti people - by that I mean people from the old Sylhet division. I know this because I am from Sylhet and when I speak to my fellow Sylhetis, especially amonst the elders this is quite apparent. Also this effect seems to be prevalent both in Bangladesh as well as in the 'expat' community living in the UK. Why do you think people have been campaigning for a direct flight from London to Sylhet without having to stop in Dhaka?

P.S. I am just killing time before thinking about tomorrow work that I need to prepare for.

Wassalamu'alaikum

Wa alaikum assalaam

erm i havent noticed it that much in our generation, i guess nowadays ppl do it just as a joke, u cant reeeeeallly be serious when u mean it ....can u? lol

however i must say that the older generation do tend to hold that opinion...they THINK that dhakaya ppl look down on sylhetis cos they're generally less educated ??? Even if that was true, u could easily say its cos dhaka is the capital city, n so ur bound to have more educated ppl flocking there....

personally i think its all down to regionalism. i mean if it wasnt enuf for us to become sunni/shia > arab/asian > pakistani/bangladeshi we nowwwww gotta have this dumb sylheti> dhakaya identity crisis

if u look at any community, u'll find this regionalism issue. its even here in the west!

one thing i have noticed though, is that some sylhetis (and yet again its in the older generation), identify themselves differently to non sylhetis. they have this weird concept of them being sylheti, n the others "bengali". as far as i know its due to the 1905 partition of bengal, whereby sylhet went to assam. it was then in the creation of pakistan that sylhet came back to bengal. so for the sake of 40 years or so, ppl have to consider themselves different lol!

fee amaanillah

Salam to all

I agree to what others before have said and I would like to add that this problem of Sylheti tribalism is to some extent still deep seated in the youngsters of the Sylheti community in the UK, particularly East London. If you engage in discussion with them concerning these things directly or indirectly - this attitute of 'them' (Dhakayya) and 'us' (sylheti) is quite apparent. It would seem that this attotute has trickled down to the youth from the old. Also I think these attitutdes come as a result of Sylheti people not going out and seeing and knowing about other parts of Bangladesh - i.e. ignorance within ourselves. Further, such reasons can also be said of other tribalistic attitudes that exist and it needs to be viewed as an evil that can lead to hatred of people and more importantly, removed through correct teaching and understanding for any people to achieve success on Earth and the Hereafter.

U cannot equate the attitudes of Sylheti people backhome with the Syheti people here - nor can you generalise all the Sylhetis living in the UK. Seems like you're the one in need of going out and broadening your horizon (to be taken lightly). Most of the Sylheti people living in the UK originate from villages - hence, a lower educational level amongst them isn't an 'earth-shattering' discovery. however this does not suggest that all Sylheti people are lesser educated and originate from villges compared to say their Nowakhali counterparts!

I'll tell you a true store - actually I don't think I can do justice to it properly now - I'm gonan have to speak to me brov n gett he proper story - it's really interstin about this particularly distinguished persona from Dhaka - and how belittles Sylheti people without realising my bro was a Sylheti - its really funny. damn I'll try to post it maybe next week

Being Sylheti

Lets not fight for identities. I think everyone should be proud of what he or she is. Being Sylheti or Non-Sylheti is not an issue at all. We are all from Bangladesh, and that's our identity in abrod and at home. I'm from Sylhet, but why do i have to look down upon those who are not from my home town? Or the otherway around. No one should look down upon anybody. Just because many people live in Dhaka, does not make them "Capital Residents" you could be from any part of Bd and live in Dhaka. Many people from Sylhet (originally)are living in Dhaka, so what? They are still Sylheti. I have been living in the US for whole life, does it make myself an American? I'm still Bangladeshi as my parents are from there.

RP is right that you shouldn't fight; everybody has a unique identity which should be respected at all times. However, you all have said that this problem is mainly with the elder generation, and you have to understand that they think in a very different way to our generation.

Don't worry about the past, worry about the future because it is down to YOU to change bad habits, which it time you will teach the next generation. Maybe its time just time to make some new friends and spread some mutual respect.
