Description:
The Islamic holiday of Eid-al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) is celebrated at the end of the Hajj each year, by Muslims throughout the world. The Hajj (annual pilgrimage to Mecca) is a time when adherents to the Islamic faith remember and honor the triumphs and tribulations of the Prophet Abraham. One of Abraham's most severe trials was when he was instructed to sacrifice his son. At the last moment he was provided with a goat, thereby sparing his son's life.
The sacrificing of an animal forms part of the rituals of Eid-al-Adha. A third of the animal is eaten by the family, a third given to friends and a third given to the poor. This is done to acknowledge that all blessings come from Allah and should be shared generously with others. The sacrifice is symbolic of the sacrifices to be made in remaining obedient to Allah.
