The Brave Santhal Tribe of Bangladesh

The Santhals of West Bengal can also be found in Bangladesh, as well as Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, which are states of northeastern India. Bengal is a region that is situated partly in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and in India. The Santhal or Santal are one of the central tribes in these regions and are known for their rich cultural practices and customs.

Jatra – Folk Theatre in Bangladesh

The word “Jatra”, directly translated, means ‘going’ or ‘journey’. This an apt description of the popular folk theatre in Bangladesh. It is through this ‘journey’ that many religious values and principles were strongly communicated in the past. Today, however, this is not always the case in modern Jatra, with many changes having occurred, specifically in the writing of plays.

Ramadan in Bangladesh

Ramadan is a month-long religious festival also celebrated in Bangladesh that culminates in the very important holiday of Eid-ul-Fitr. During the Ramadan period, followers of Islam overcrowd the mosques for prayer and take part in this festival. Ramadan is supposed to promote peace and places emphasis on the teachings of the Quran (Koran) and the faith of Islam. It is an integral part of the culture in Bangladesh where Islam is one of the most widely practiced religions.

The Curious Barking Deer

If you are planning a trip to one of Bangladesh’s many national parks, you might want to keep an eye out for the elusive barking deer. These rather shy little creatures live in the dense jungles of India and, although they are quite numerous throughout the region, it is often difficult to spot them because they are quick to scuttle away through the forest undergrowth.
